Book Description
Neurasthenia, meaning nerve weakness, was ‘invented’ in the United States as a disorder of modernity, caused by the fast pace of urban life. Soon after, from the early 1880s onwards, this modern disease crossed the Atlantic. Neurasthenia became much less ‘popular’ in Britain or the Netherlands than in Germany. Neurasthenia’s heyday continued into the first decade of the twentieth century. The label referred to conditions similar to those currently labelled as chronic fatigue syndrome. Why this rise and fall of neurasthenia, and why these differences in popularity This book, which emerged out of an Anglo-Dutch-German conference held in June 2000, explores neurasthenia’s many-sided history from a comparative perspective.

Tiresian Poetics

Tiresian Poetics PDF Author: Ed Madden
Publisher: Associated University Presse
ISBN: 9780838639375
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 414

Book Description
"Blind seer, articulate dead, and mythic transsexual, the figure of Tiresias has always represented a liminal identity and forms of knowledge associated with the crossing of epistemological and ontological boundaries. In twentieth-century literature, the boundaries crossed andembodied by Tiresias are primarily sexual, and the liminal and usually prophetic knowledge associated with Tiresias is based in sexual difference and sexual pleasure. Indeed, in literature of the twentieth century, Tiresias has come to function as a cultural shorthand for queer sexualities." "This book argues for the emergence of a Tiresian poetics at the end of the nineteenth century. As Victorian andmodernist writers reimagined Ovid's tale of sex change and sexual judgment, they also created a poetics that grounded artistic or perfonnative power in figures of sexual difference - most often a feminized, often homosexual malebody, which this study links to the developing discourses of homosexuality and sexual identity."--BOOK JACKET.

The Great War, The Waste Land and the Modernist Long Poem

The Great War, The Waste Land and the Modernist Long Poem PDF Author: Oliver Tearle
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1350027022
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 208

Book Description
The Great War, The Waste Land and the Modernist Long Poem explores how cultural responses to the trauma of the First World War found expression in the form of the modernist long poem. Beginning with T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land, Oliver Tearle reads that most famous example of the genre in comparison with lesser known long poems, such as Hope Mirrlees's Paris: A Poem, Richard Aldington's A Fool I' the Forest and Nancy Cunard's Parallax. As well as presenting a new history of this neglected genre, the book examines the ways in which the modernist long poem represented the seminal literary form for grappling with the crises of European modernity in the wake of World War I.
