Martines de Pasqually was born in Grenoble, around 1710, from a father of Spanish origin and a French mother. He was military in France for a few years with the rank of lieutenant. In 1747, he was in the service of Spain and fought in Italy at its service. In his book The Life of Louis-Claude de Saint-Martin, on page 9, the historian Jacques Matter writes about him: "He (Louis-Claude de Saint-Martin) met Martines de Pasqually, one of these extraordinary men, great hierophant of secret initiations which, to communicate their mysteries, seek less the great reputation than a confidential setting." He considers the masonry of his time being apocryphal, that is, diverted from his goal. In Foix, he founded a chapter, the Temple of the Élus Cohëns. However, it is in Bordeaux that the activities of the Order of the Élus Cohëns begin. Martines moved there in April 1762 to establish the general center of his activities.

The Treatise on the Reintegration of Beings into Their Original Estate, Virtues and Powers both Spiritual and Divine, of Martinez (Martinés) de Pasqually (c.1727 - 1774), was partially finished at the time of his death. It was intended to be a full commentary on the Pentateuch, and that which we have was composed during the period when Pierre Fournié and Louis-Claude de Saint-Martin were his personal secretaries. Like his contemporary Emmanuel Swedenborg, Pasqually is said to have experienced dreams and visions of spiritual realms and the multiplicity of beings inhabiting them. While the original document was secretly passed between the Réaux-Croix, or members of the highest Grade of this Order, to be copied by hand and returned to the author or his secretary (variously Abbé Pierre Fournié and Louis-Claude de Saint-Martin), it eventually made its way into the public domain a century after the author's death, published in France by René Philippon. Since then, several new copies of the Treatise have been discovered in private collections and languishing in long-forgotten library archives, all slightly different because of the author's changes, or the inevitable errors made or embellishments added by the copiers. In this translation, we now see the debt the Treatise owes to Masonic symbolism, its role as a source for Martinism and the Rectified Scottish Rite, with its references to the Path of Reintegration and appeals to the "Man of Desire". It also allows for the clearest explanation of the Universal Table (included in the book) seen to date. M.R. Osborne's Introduction is masterful and provides an excellent historical explanation and scene-setting for the Treatise, and even lifts a corner of the veil into the translators' personal beliefs. The book follows the original layout (which had no chapters or breaks) but helps us along with images of biblical scenes artfully used to break the text up into logical sections.
