Ornamentation in Baroque and Post-Baroque Music, with Special Emphasis on J.S. Bach

Ornamentation in Baroque and Post-Baroque Music, with Special Emphasis on J.S. Bach PDF Author: Frederick Neumann
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 0691213348
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 644

Book Description
Ornaments play an enormous role in the music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and ambiguities in their notation (as well as their frequent omission in the score) have left doubt as to how composers intended them to be interpreted. Frederick Neumann, himself a violinist and conductor, questions the validity of the rigid principles applied to their performance. In this controversial work, available for the first time in paperback, he argues that strict constraints are inconsistent with the freedom enjoyed by musicians of the period. The author takes an entirely new look at ornamentation, and particularly that of J. S. Bach. He draws on extensive research in England, France, Germany, Italy, and the United States to show that prevailing interpretations are based on inadequate evidence. These restrictive interpretations have been far-reaching in their effect on style. By questioning them, this work continues to stimulate a reorientation in our understandiing of Baroque and post-Baroque music.

Book Description
Excerpt from Treatise on the Ornaments of Music Tartini's style is clear and some of his statements unequivocal in the extreme, all of which helps shed light on aspects of per formante which are still not completely understood. Tartini's evidence helps ex plain, for example, why the leading non keyboard books (tosi, Quantz, Geminiani, L. Mozart) omit symbols for the mordent and turn, and why these very terms are treated differently in these books. Treatise on Vocal Performance and Ornamentation by Johann Adam Hiller

Treatise on Vocal Performance and Ornamentation by Johann Adam Hiller PDF Author: Johann Adam Hiller
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1139428985
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 211

Book Description
Hiller's Treatise on Vocal Performance and Ornamentation was published in Germany in 1780 and is an important manual on vocal technique and performance in the eighteenth century. Hiller was a masterful educator and was active not only as a teacher but as a critic, composer, conductor and music director. Thus, his observations served not only to raise the standards of singing in Germany, based on the Italian model, but to present complicated material, particularly ornamentation, in a manner that his peers, the middle class, could emulate. This present edition, translated with an introduction and extensive commentary by musicologist Suzanne J. Beicken, makes Hiller's treatise available for the first time in English. With its emphasis on practical aspects of ornamentation, declamation and style it will be valuable to instrumentalists as well as singers and is a significant contribution to the understanding of performance practice in the eighteenth-century.
