The Travels of Ibn Battuta to Central Asia

The Travels of Ibn Battuta to Central Asia PDF Author: Ibn Batuta
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781558765238
Category : Asia, Central
Languages : en
Pages : 142

Book Description
The original Travels of Ibn Battuta ranks high amongst the masterpieces of Arabic geographical literature and is of great significance in the understanding of the history of the peoples inhabiting the Central Asian states. In 1325, Ibn Battuta, a traveler and adventurer from Tangiers, embarked on an extraordinary journey via Mecca to Egypt, East Africa, India, and China and returned some thirty years later to write about his experiences. Ibrahimov Nematulla Ibrahimovich details the life and travels of Ibn Battuta to give the reader an idea of the extent of the adventures and also to provide insights into the remarkable traveler himself. He then chronicles both lay and learned opinion over the centuries with regard to the amazing yet controversial journey, revealing the doubt that existed towards the authenticity of the tales: were they simply a fantastic invention or were they real experiences? To illustrate his argument, Ibrahimovich then selects a passage from The Travels concerning Central Asia and provides extensive historical and philological commentary and notes on the passage in an effort to persuade the reader of the authenticity of the tales and their value in helping us understand the peoples of Central Asia in the fourteenth century.

The Persian Mirror

The Persian Mirror PDF Author: Susan Mokhberi
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0190884819
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 224

Book Description
The Persian Mirror explores France's preoccupation with Persia in the seventeenth century. Long before Montesquieu's Persian Letters, French intellectuals, diplomats and even ordinary Parisians were fascinated by Persia and eagerly consumed travel accounts, fairy tales, and the spectacle of the Persian ambassador's visit to Paris and Versailles in 1715. Using diplomatic sources, fiction and printed and painted images, The Persian Mirror describes how the French came to see themselves in Safavid Persia. In doing so, it revises our notions of orientalism and the exotic and suggests that early modern Europeans had more nuanced responses to Asia than previously imagined.

Travels in Persia

Travels in Persia PDF Author: Thomas Herbert
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134285841
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 426

Book Description
He traversed a great part of Persia. He had a good eye for detail and a great appetite for information His was one of the best seventeenth century travel narratives, and became immediately popular on publication.' The Times When first published in 1928, Herbert's work enjoyed immediate success. Considerable interest was being taken in Persia at the time and a full account of the country was welcomed. The narrative is of considerable importance from an historical point of view, as it gives the only detailed account of the first English embassy to Persia. It also paints a graphic picture of the Perisa and the Persians in the early part of the seventeenth century. Having spent over a year in the country, travelling from south to north and back again, there are vivid and extensive descriptions of the towns of Abbas, Lar, Shiraz, Persepolis, Isfahan, Ashraf, Tehran, Qazvin, Qum and Kashan. This edition is based on the revised edition of 1677, but has in turn been edited so that the version reprinted here includes only what the author actually saw or gleaned first hand. The notes include identification of places and a glossary of the strange or obsolete terms.
