El objetivo de este estudio es analizar la repercusión de la cuantificación de los beneficios medioambientales derivados de la construcción de una línea de Alta Velocidad ferroviaria sobre la rentabilidad de estos proyectos. Concretamente, se valorarán los impactos debidos a la contaminación atmosférica, acústica, cambio climático, afectación al paisaje, dependencia energética y radiaciones asociados a un proyecto de transporte. El análisis se realiza a partir del caso de estudio de la línea de Alta Velocidad Madrid- Barcelona. Los resultados permiten observar que, si bien el trasvase de viajeros al ferrocarril conlleva mejoras ambientales, la aportación de los ahorros de costes externos a los beneficios del proyecto es demasiado modesta para justificar por sí sola la inversión en una L.A.V. Se verifica también que la rentabilidad del proyecto es muy poco sensible a variaciones en los parámetros de cálculo de las externalidades medioambientales, manteniendo el mismo procedimiento de evaluación.
