Maritime Logistics

Maritime Logistics PDF Author: Dong-Wook Song
Publisher: Kogan Page Publishers
ISBN: 0749472693
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 476

Book Description
Globalisation and the rapid increase in world trade in the past decade have contributed to greater demand for international transport and logistics and, consequently, the expansion of the maritime industry. The dramatic changes in the mode of world trade and cargo transportation make it more important than ever to have a clear understanding of the way in which freight is transported by sea and the role of ports in this exchange. At the cutting edge in its assessment of the industry, Maritime Logistics covers the whole scope of maritime logistics and examines latest logistical developments within the port and shipping industry. With a range of new international contributors, this new edition has been thoroughly revised and updated. There are new chapters on port centric logistics, hinterland logistics and global supply chains, maritime transport and logistics as a trade facilitator, and future trends and developments. Written by a team of international experts with over fifty years' experience in the field, Maritime Logistics provides a truly global perspective. The book covers everything that students of logistics, as well as those working within the industry, need to know about maritime logistics, including shipping lines, containers, tankers, dry bulk, port-centric logistics, and much more.

The Maritime Transport Crisis

The Maritime Transport Crisis PDF Author: Hans Jürgen Peters
Publisher: World Bank Publications
ISBN: 9780821327142
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 54

Book Description
Effective planning and management of urban infrastructure is essential to improving the standard of living in rapidly developing urban areas. Deterioration or cessation of services can create health risks, limit economic productivity, damage public and private property, and lead to congestion in transport and communications. But effective infrastructure services are impossible without adequate records and maps of municipal facilities, particularly those underground. The authors review recent developments in the recording and mapping of urban infrastructure. The paper identifies the institutional, organizational, and technological issues involved and explores some strategic options for addressing these pressing issues. The options discussed include how best to determine the proper institutional structure, develop human resources, and make the best use of technology. The authors perceive an urgent need for development of legal frameworks to make recordkeeping more comprehensive and compatible among various utilities, localities, and governmental bodies. They advise that immediate attention be given to a particular organizational issue: in many utilities no one department is responsible for collecting and processing data, and even when such responsibility is designated, the methods to be used are unclear or the resources are inadequate. The paper offers case studies and concludes that improvements in utility mapping and recordkeeping are cost effective, enhance the efficiency of the utility, and improve the overall quality of urban life.

Urban and Maritime Transport XXVII

Urban and Maritime Transport XXVII PDF Author: G. Passerini
Publisher: WIT Press
ISBN: 1784664332
Category : Transportation
Languages : en
Pages : 318

Book Description
Better urban transport systems and the need for a healthier environment are continuous requirements that create a fertile atmosphere for original ideas, innovative approaches and applications of advanced technologies, their tests and evaluations in practice. Moreover, there is a growing need for integration with IT systems and applications to improve safety and efficiency. Meanwhile, the substantial growth of maritime shipping has resulted in large transported quantities around the world, creating a demand for innovative solutions for ports and fleets. The apparently parallel topics of Urban Transport and Maritime Transport meet in the transport and environmental management of coastal cities, both being affected positively and negatively by landslide and seaside traffic. Maritime Transport is highly interconnected with rail, road and air services, as well as inland waterways. Each of these must therefore operate complimentary of one another to maximise efficiency and respond rapidly to variable economic and political contingencies. The variety of topics covered in this volume reflects the complex interaction of transport systems with their environment and the need to establish integrated strategies. The goal is to arrive at optimal socio-economic solutions while reducing the negative environmental impacts of transportation systems typically by interdisciplinary approaches.

Book Description
Maritime transport is the transport of people or goods by water. It is the backbone of world trade and globalization. Twenty-four hours a day and all year round, ships carry cargoes to all corners of the globe. Maritime Transport focuses on the operational side of this important industry, covering many topics such as sea traffic currents, passenger transport, short sea shipping and dangerous cargoes. Parts one and two of Maritime Transport present the concepts, theory and background information, then part three presents more complex and deeper issues such as the maritime transportation of the future. It covers topics such as intelligent shipping, data exchange at sea and maritime security. In addition, the book includes fascinating case studies and examples, such as maritime transport in the Baltic sea, ship strategies in Norway and Greece and the benefits of slow steaming. At the end of each chapter there are questions that will help students to gain a deeper understanding of the many topics covered.
