Book Description
Three transects of the Gulf Stream between Cape Cod and Bermuda including data from transport float (free fall instrument) observations and hydrographic stations are presented and compared. Measured volume transport (by transport float observations) appeared to decrease from 180 plus or minus 20 to 113 plus or minus 20 million cu m/sec in a period of less than one week. Geostrophic calculations based on a reference level at the ocean bottom gave a volume transport of 100 to 120 million cu m/sec. Although the Stream appeared to extend to the ocean bottom on all three sections, deep countercurrents (westward flow) were also observed on two of the sections. (Author).

An Analysis of the Potential Vorticity Distribution Across the Gulf Stream

An Analysis of the Potential Vorticity Distribution Across the Gulf Stream PDF Author: Elizabeth Messenger Johns
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 11

Book Description
The various terms in an equation of potential vorticity can be estimated from hydrographic sections and appropriately chosen or measured reference velocities across the Gulf Stream. Results from such an analysis are presented for a section taken in July 1967 off Cape Hatteras (Richardson, 1970) which utilized transport floats in addition to hydrographic measurements. This section was chosen for its similarity in geographic location and measurement techniques to CTD and transport float work which will be done in July 1982 on the R/V Endeavor.

Gulf Stream Recirculation Experiment (GUSREX) and Line Experiment SOFAR Float Data, 1980-1982

Gulf Stream Recirculation Experiment (GUSREX) and Line Experiment SOFAR Float Data, 1980-1982 PDF Author: Maureen A. Kennelly

Category : Gulf Stream

Pages : 810

Book Description
Thirty-nine neutrally buoyant SOFAR floats were tracked in the western North Atlantic at depths of 700 m and 2000 m. These floats were launched in an effort to measure the deep current structure of the Gulf Stream and its recirculation near 55°W. Three separate deployments were made in April and October 1980 and July 1981. The floats were tracked by means of moored autonomous listening stations. The basic data consist of float trajectories, and temperature, pressure, and velocity measurements along the trajectories. This report describes the GUSREX experiment and instrument performance. It presents plots illustrating the horizontal structure and scales of the general circulation in the Gulf Stream and its recirculation for the period October 1980 to May 1982.

Preliminary Results on Normalization of Hydrographic Sections of the Gulf Stream

Preliminary Results on Normalization of Hydrographic Sections of the Gulf Stream PDF Author: Timothy W. Kao

Book Description
In this paper, we present the preliminary results of the normalization of the cross-stream density data compiled from three transects (Sections I, II, and III) of the Gulf Stream '60 data (Fuglister, 1963). All three sections are approximately perpendicular to the Stream direction. The procedure for the analysis is as follows: from the computed density field, we calculate first the sea-surface height anomaly across the front using 1500 m as the reference level. From the sea-surface height profile, we then estimate the value of the maximum slope of the profile and the maximum height change across the anomaly. From these, the length scale is readily obtained.

The Gulf Stream Meanders Experiment

The Gulf Stream Meanders Experiment PDF Author: John M. Bane

Book Description
This report documents hydrographic data collected during two cruises in R/V Endeavor in 1979: EN-040 (2-8 Aug) and EN-045 (16-23 Nov). The hydrographic data from two additional cruises during the first 1979 field phase of the project are documented in a separate report. The hydrographic measurements were made in support of a moored instrument program. The data from the moored instruments (primarily current meters) are reported in separate data reports for the winter and summer 1979 field phases. The objective of the hydrographic program was to vertically and horizontally map the temperature and salinity fields of the Gulf Stream, hopefully as a meander passed through the moored instrument array. The hydrographic measurements were made in conjunction with mooring deployment and recovery operations. The data reported here were collected with a Plessey 9040 STD system attached to a Niskin rosette sampler equipped with Niskin sample bottles and reversing thermometers. In addition, many temperature profiles were made with a Sippican XBT System. Surface bucket samples were taken at most stations. Beyond the presentation of contoured fields of certain derived hydrographic quantities the data are not analyzed. Interpretation of the data is not provided here.
