Book Description
Transport phenomena in plasmas are the relatively slow processes of particle momentum and energy transport systems in a state of mechanical equilibrium. In contrast to neutral gases, these phenomena in plasmas are greatly influenced by self-consistent fields, in particular electric fields. These can produce particle and energy fluxes, in addition to those generated by the inhomogeneity of the plasma composition and temperature. As a result, the physical effects accompanying transport phenomena in plasmas are far more numerous and complicated than those in neutral gases, and the solution of corresponding problems is more difficult. The effects, however, are usually far more interesting and sometimes surprising. This book presents a systematic survey and analysis of the main mechanisms of transport phenomena in plasma and gives examples of gradually increasing complexity to illustrate these mechanisms and the relationships between them. The author pays special attention to the analysis of experimental measurements and considers the relevant processes analytically as well as qualitatively. The majority of problems dealt with in this book are of considerable practical interest, and the phenomena described often determine the main characteristics of processes and devices. Transport Phenomena in Partially Ionized Plasma will be of interest to researchers who need to know the properties of real, specific systems, as well as to engineers and advanced students in the physics of plasmas, semiconductors, various types of gas discharges and the ionosphere.

Transport Properties of Two-temperature Partially Ionized Plasmas

Book Description
A simplification of the Chapman-Enskog method for the calculation of transport properties of two-temperature, partially ionized gas mixtures in a magnetic field is presented. The simplication is achieved by exploiting the fact that the electron mass is much smaller than that of any other constituent of the gas. A systematic study is presented of the tensor coefficients for the electron electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and thermal diffusion. The interplay between the degrees of ionization and magnetic field in determining the sign of the transverse electron thermal diffusion coefficient has been examined. Simple formulas for the thermal diffusion coefficients in the presence of magnetic field have been obtained. The unified theory of Kihara and Aono for charged particle interactions was applied to obtain improved values of the transport coefficients when the number of particles in a Debye sphere is not large. These have been compared with theories based on a cut-off Coulomb potential, and on a shielded-Coulomb potential. It was found that the unified theory and the shielded-Coulomb theory are in close agreement. Mixture rules were given for all three transport coefficients, including the case when there is a magnetic field present. Simplifications introduced into the Chapman-Enskog method were also demonstrated in obtaining the transport coefficients of the heavy particles of a three component, two temperature plasma. Transport Processes in Multicomponent Plasma

Transport Processes in Multicomponent Plasma PDF Author: V.M. Zhdanov
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9780415279208
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 294

Book Description
Transport Processes in Multicomponent Plasma is a revised and updated version of the original Russian edition. The book examines transport phenomena in multicomponent plasma and looks at important issues such as partially ionized gases, molecular gas mixtures and methods of calculating kinetic coefficients. It makes a logical progression from simpler to more general problems, and the results presented in the book may be used to calculate the kinetic coefficients of plasma in electric and magnetic fields. The author concludes by describing several practical applications such as electrical conductivity and Hall's effect in MHD-generators. Transport Processes in Multicomponent Plasma will be of interest to advanced students and specialized researchers working in various aspects of plasma physics, including both cold plasmas for industrial research and high temperature plasmas in fusion.

Unified Transport Theory of Partially Ionized Nonisothermal Plasmas

Book Description
"The unified charged-particle interaction operators of Kihara and Aono have been used in the system of kinetic equations for a partially ionized, nonisothermal gas in a magnetic field. It has been assumed that the coupling between the kinetic equation of the electrons and those of the heavy species is weak, as it is always the case in MHD-generator plasmas. It has been demonstrated that the new theory introduces essential corrections to the values of transport coefficients calculated by other theories of non isothermalplasmas. Simplified calculation methods for electron transport coefficients have been proposed, which are based on the exact results given by this theory" --Abstract.
