Due to the increase in transgender characters in scripted television and film in the 2010s, trans visibility has been presented as a relatively new phenomenon that has positively shifted the cis society’s acceptance of the trans community. This book counters this claim to assert that such representations actually present limited and harmful characterizations, as they have for decades. To do so, this book analyzes transgender narratives in scripted visual media from the 1960s to 2010s across a variety of genres, including independent and mainstream films and television dramatic series and sitcoms, judging not the veracity of such representations per se but dissecting their transphobia as a constant despite relevant shifts that have improved their veracity and variety. Already ingrained with their own ideological expectations, genres shift the framing of the trans character, particularly the relevance of their gender difference for cisgender characters and society. The popularity of trans characters within certain genres also provides a historical lineage that is examined against the progression of transgender rights activism and corresponding transphobic falsehoods, concluding that this popular medium continues to offer a limited and narrow conception of gender, the variability of the transgender experience, and the range of transgender identities.

"Transgender (or trans) voices have not been widely explored in media studies literature. This qualitative work seeks to add to emerging body of transgender media studies by examining via trans participants two recent programs broadcast in US television that feature trans characters and content. The participants offered transcentric feedback to media examples that highlighted the unique perspectives of trans people and provided insight into how media narratives affect their populations. The participants identified themes within the media texts that they found disturbing and inauthentic of the trans experience, such as projecting cisgender values on trans people, highlighting feminine behavior in ways to draw attention, promoting difference via othering, promoting transphobic violence, and emphasizing the trope of the trans person as a tragic figure. The study participants felt that cisgendered people were making media based on cisgendered values not trans values or experiences. As a transwoman, I know well the stigma that marginalized groups face when confronted with those negative narratives. I'm personally aware that these narratives can harm people and believe the consequences of those representations are important to recognize and give voice to within media studies. This work is a contribution to the emerging study of trans representations that will allow media producers and others to understand and recognize the unique experiences of trans people. This study considers the case of representation of transgender people and issues on American fictional television from 2004 to 2014, a period which represents a steady surge in transgender television characters relative to what came before, and prefigures a more recent burgeoning of transgender characters since 2014. The study thus positions the period of analysis as an historical period in the changing representation of transgender characters. A discourse analysis is employed that not only assesses the way that transgender characters have been represented, but contextualizes American fictional television depictions of transgender people within the broader sociopolitical landscape in which those depictions have emerged and which they likely inform. Television representations and the social milieu in which they are situated are considered as parallel, mutually informing discourses, including the ways in which those representations have been engaged discursively through reviews, news coverage and, in some cases, blogs.

This book examines queer characters in popular American television, demonstrating how entertainment can educate audiences about LGBT identities and social issues like homophobia and transphobia. Through case studies of musical soap operas (Glee and Empire), reality shows (RuPaul’s Drag Race, The Prancing Elites Project and I Am Cait) and “quality” dramas (Looking, Transparent and Sense8), it argues that entertainment elements such as music, humour, storytelling and melodrama function as pedagogical tools, inviting viewers to empathise with and understand queer characters. Each chapter focuses on a particular programme, looking at what it teaches—its representation of queerness—and how it teaches this—its pedagogy. Situating the programmes in their broader historical context, this study also shows how these televisual texts exemplify a specific moment in American television.
