Excerpt from Transactions of the International Engineering Congress, 1915 To properly treat this subject would require a large staff of experts; their labors would fill some tens of thousands of pages. In the limited space allowed me I shall mention a few matters that seem interesting and will give some references to publications wherein the desirous student may pursue the subject further. To make an acceptable definition is not easy: broadly speaking, "Mining" is the extraction of metals, minerals, mineral fuels, ores, and structural materials from the earth. In so far as it works in the earth, mining resembles agriculture, and the relative merits of mining and agriculture have been disputed from time immemorial. Agricola devotes several pages to this subject and has practically exhausted it; he finds "that mining is not less noble, though far more profitable than agriculture" and that it is a "calling of peculiar dignity". Excerpt from Transactions of the International Engineering Congress, 1915: Metallurgy, Session Held Under the Auspices of American Society of Civil Engineers, American Institute of Mining Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Institute of Electrical Engineers, the Society of Naval Architects and Marin The variations in the properties of steel castings are due (1) to variations in the composition of the steel, (2) to the annealing or heat treatment to which the steel is subjected, and (3) to the soundness of the casting. The last of these may be summarized in the familiar saying, a casting is always a cast ing, by which the initiated mean that it may always con tain hidden blow-holes or shrinkage cavities that cause or aid its failure when least expected. The gases that are liberated from solidifying steel, of course, cause blow-holes in ingots as well as in castings, but by the time the ingot is reduced to the rolled or forged shape, these holes are at least closed up, if not partially welded - and they are generally so located as to be least harmful to the finished piece. In the case of castings, the gas from the metal and the steam and gas set free from the sand mould may cause blow-holes that can not be detected by surface inspection of the piece. The amount of lumber handled by the saw mills of the United States, in 1911, 1912, and 1913, by States and species, is shown in Table 1 of the Appendix. The average amount of wood used annually in the United States for the last few years has been about feet B. M. This amount is made up of sawed lumber, ties, mine timbers, wood used for paper pulp, distillation, etc., but does not include fuel, fence posts, and rails.
