Book Description
Excerpt from Transactions of the American Philosophical Society, 1898, Vol. 19: Held at Philadelphia, for Promoting Useful Knowledge Storangen der kleinen Planeten, undoubtedly marks a great advance in the determina tion of the general perturbations of the heavenly bodies. The value of the work is greatly enhanced by an application of the method to a numerical example in which are given the perturbations of Egeria produced by the action of Jupiter, Mars, and Saturn. And yet, notwithstanding the many exceptional features of the work commending it to attention, astronomers seem to have been de terred by the refined analysis and laborious computations from anything like a general use of the method; and they still adhere to the method of special perturbations devel oped by lagrange. Hansen himself seems to have felt the force of the objections to his method, since in a posthumous memoir published in 1875, entitled Ueber die Sto'rangen der grossen Planeten, insbesondere des Jupiters, his former positive views relative to the convergence of series, and the proper angles to be used in the argu ments, are greatly modified. Book Description
Excerpt from Transactions of the American Philosophical Society, Held at Philadelphia, for Promoting Useful Knowledge, 1825, Vol. 2 In the year 1805, he received from Mr. Jefferson, President of the United States, with whom he had been in habits of friendship, the unsolicited apc pointment of Director of the national Mint. This office he filled with great reputation until his last illness, when he resigned, and his son in law, Dr. Moore, was appointed by President Monroe in his place. In the year 1816 the Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania, in testimony of their approbation of his long tried talents and services, conferred on him the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws. That he should be a Fellow of the American Philosophical Society was a matter of course. He was elected in 1783, and remained an active, zealous, and useful Member to the time of his death. He was chosen Secretary in 1784, vice-president in 1799, and ultimately in 1819 raised to the Chair which had been filled by Franklin, Rittenhouse, Jefferson, and Wistar. His zeal for the interests of this Institution was always conspicuous, and he con ducted himself during his Presidency to the entire satisfaction of the Society. Book Description
Excerpt from Transactions of the American Philosophical Society, Vol. 2: Held at Philadelphia, for Promoting Useful Knowledge It may not be amiss in this place to insert the Rules which the Society have adopted for the direction of their Committees in the choice of papers for publication. First, "That the grounds of the Com- "mittee's choice of papers for the press, should "always be the importance or singularity of the "subjects, or the advantageous manner of "treating them, without pretending to an "swer, or to make the society answerable, "for the certainty of the facts, or propriety "of the reasonings, contained in the several "papers so published, which must still rest on "the credit or judgment of their respective "authors. Secondly, "That neither the Society, nor "the Committee of the press, do ever give "their opinion as a body, upon any paper "they may publish, or upon any subject of "Art or Nature that comes before them." Book Description
Excerpt from Transactions of the American Philosophical Society, 1834, Vol. 4: Held at Philadelphia, for Promoting Useful Knowledge Through the medium of the Arabic language, my young Marabout instructs me in his native tongue; and the enclosed sketches are the first fruits of the instruction I have received from him. He has translated for me into Arabic several Berber tales; one of which I have selected, and send you, as well as a piece of Berber poetry, with literal translations, which I have been able to make into English by means Of the explanations of my Taleb. I could not have done it without his aid. His mind is equal to the analytical labour which it required. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Transactions of the American Philosophical Society, Vol. 11: Held at Philadelphia, for Promoting Useful Knowledge In his different journeys into the interior, he paid a particular attention to the trees that formed the bulk of the forests, with reference to the nature and uses of their woods, or as Objects of commerce between the different states, _ or of exportation abroad. He ascertained the sources of the different barks employed in tanning; inquired into the quality and price of the various woods used for fuel, and formed a complete collection of polished specimens Of the species employed in cabinet work or other wise. In a word, the range of his observations was unlimited, and could not fail to interest exceed ingly the people of the United States, as well as Europeans, and to become one of the main points of the splendid work which he published, almost immediately, after his return. Michaux remained nearly three years in the United States, diligently employed in his arduous task. During his residence, he formed many valuable acquaintances. Besides the late Muhlenberg, Hamil ton, Barton, Hosack, Alex. Wilson, Eddy, &c., he was on terms of friendship with others still living, among whom I may mention Dr. John Francis of New York and Major Leconte. Michaux was elected a Member of the American Philosophical Society On the 2lst of April, 1809; and we have a proof of the value in which he held this honour, by the handsome provision made in favour of this institution, in his testament, bearing date of May 3oth, 1852. I should fail in my duty towards one, who was the companion and helpmate of the two Michaux, if I omitted here to mention his name. This is the humble Paul Saulnier, the same journeyman gardener who, in 1785, had accompanied them to this country, and was intrusted with the care Of/the New Jersey nursery. Francois Michaux never spoke of him but with feelings Of respect and affection. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society Held at Philadelphia for Promoting Useful Knowledge, 1876, Vol. 15 It thus comes to pass that, neglecting the essential characters of the tribe, to which the species may properly belong, the definition of the genus will approximate in language very closely to that of some other genus, belong ing to a very distinct part of the series. In other words, the genera belonging to several tribes will agree with each other in similar characters of less value than the tribal characters. What I have just said regarding genera is equally true in respect to species. The form, color and sculpture in many instances are repeated in tribes which from their geographical distribution and method of life can not be supposed to have any immediate genetic derivation. Instances of this kind of resemblance will be mentioned both in the Introduction, and in the body of the memoir.
