Principles of Human Joint Replacement
Author: Frederick F. Buechel
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319153110
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 442
Book Description
This book is written for the users and designers of joint replacements. In its second extended edition it conveys to the reader the knowledge accumulated by the authors during their forty year effort on the development of replacement devices for the lower limb for the purpose of aiding the reader in their design and evaluation of joint replacement devices. The early chapters describe the engineering, scientific and medical principles needed for replacement joint evaluation. One must understand the nature and performance of the materials involved and their characteristics in vivo, i.e. the response of the body to implant materials. It is also essential to understand the response of the implants to applied loading and motion, particularly in the hostile physiological environment. A chapter describes the design methodology now required for joint replacement in the USA and EU countries. The remaining chapters provide a history of joint replacement, an evaluation of earlier and current devices and sample case histories of some of the authors’ devices. The present second edition includes various additional case reports as well as a new chapter devoted to the shoulder. Drs. Buechel, an orthopaedic surgeon, and Pappas, a professor of Mechanical Engineering, are the designers of several successful joint replacement systems. The most well-known of these is the pioneering LCS knee replacement.

The Subchondral Bone Plate
Author: Magdalena Müller-Gerbl
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642720196
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 208
Book Description
Investigations on anatomical specimens have demonstrated that the subchondral mineralization does indeed show regular distribution patterns from which conclusions about the mechanical situation within an individual joint may be drawn. Since radiographical densitometry and histological methods are only available for determining the adaptive reaction of the bone to the mechanical situation in a joint after death, the information obtained applies only to an end situation and tells us nothing about the development of the changes with time. Furthermore, investigations carried out on human specimens by radiographical densitometry mostly apply to samples of a particular age, since such specimens can be acquired only from departments of pathology, forensic medicine or anatomy.

Orthofix External Fixation in Trauma and Orthopaedics
Author: Giovanni De Bastiani
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1447106911
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 1102
Book Description
Orthofix External Fixation in Trauma and Orthopaedics provides the scientific basis behind the success of the Orthofix system of external fixators, which are now widely used throughout the world. These devices are used in the treatment of serious fractures, limb lengthening and limb reconstruction. This book covers comprehensively the wide range of scenarios in which such devices can be used. Each topic is dealt with by the appropriate international expert in the field. Orthofix External Fixation in Trauma and Orthopaedics should be read by all those involved in elective or traumatic orthopaedics.

Controversies in Hip Surgery
Author: Robert B. Bourne
Publisher:
ISBN: 0192631616
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 331
Book Description
The purposes of this book is to give an overview of controversies that orthopaedic surgeons might have to consider when carrying out all levels of hip surgery. Contributions cover such important paediatric problems such as developmental dysplasia of the hip, Perthes disease, slipped capital femoral epiphysis and hip problems associated with neurological diseases. Traumatic conditions of the hip, including acetabular fractures and femoral neck fractures are covered in detail. Considerable emphasis is given to the field of both primarily and revision total hip replacement, with special emphasis on the difference which occur in Europe and North America. Like every other aspect of hip disease, the field of total hip anthroplasty is continuously changing to improve both the quality and durability of the clinical result. Finally, post-operative complications and their avoidance are covered, particularly in the fields of deep vein thrombosis prophylaxis and management of the infected total hip arhtroplasty. The contributions in this volume are from an international array of experts in the field of hip surgery.
