Tragedies

Tragedies PDF Author: Lucius Annaeus Seneca
Publisher: Forgotten Books

Category : Latin drama (Tragedy)

Book Description
Excerpt from The Tragedies The place of the tragedies of Seneca in literature is unique. They stand as the sole surviving representatives, barring a few fragments, of an extensive Roman product in the tragic drama. They therefore serve as the only connecting link between ancient and modern tragedy. They are, moreover, modeled more or less closely after the tragedies of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides; and the Greek and Roman product in literature along parallel lines cannot be better studied than by a comparison of these Senecan plays with their Greek prototypes - a comparison which is not possible in comedy, since, unfortunately, the Greek originals of Plautus and Terence have not come down to us. Book Description
Excerpt from Greek Tragedy His book does not pretend to be a summary of known facts relating to Greek Tragedy. Nor is it, except incidentally, an essay in critical apprecia tion. Its aim is to help modern readers to enjoy Greek plays. For that reason stress has been laid on ideas and conventions which are not likely to be at first sight obvious to an English reader. That is why more space is given to Aeschylus than to either of his successors. That is also the explanation of the brief allusion which is made to some of the greatest of Greek tragedies. The Oedipus Tyrannus, for instance, depends for its effect upon qualities which are apparent, even in translation, to all readers who care for poetry and drama. It may be added that this book will be of little use unless the reader will turn to the plays them selves, either in the original or at least in a translation. Finally, remarks which are made in regard to one play often apply with equal force to many others. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Shakespeare's Tragedies (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: D. J. Snider

Book Description
Excerpt from Shakespeare's Tragedies This play shows in many ways that it belongs to the youthful productions of Shakespeare. Its theme is the passion of youth; it has the wild freedom and intensity of youth. There is a lack of that severity of treatment which belongs to the later works of the Poet; there are parts which seem very loosely connected with the fundamental thought, and then again there are other parts developed at length which appear quite unnecessary to the action. There is often a sensuous fullness of delineation, and often an abstract brevity; there are found the finest and purest bursts of poetry intermingled with frigid conceits and far-fetched antitheses. Everywhere in the drama can be noticed an inequality - an inequality in thought, in language, in the structure of the plot. Still, beneath all this play of caprice and irregularity there is felt to be a deep, pervading harmony throughout the entire work. The inequality seems to be the inequality of the subject - the inequality of youth with its fitful, tempestuous passion. It has been well named the tragedy of love, love in all its conflicts, love in all its extravagance and volcanic tossings, love despised and love triumphant. It portrays this passion boiling over with a fervor which sweeps down all traditional barriers, even the most deadly enmity, and which is ready to struggle with death itself. The theme is therefore love, unconquerable, irresistible, of which the individual is the merest instrument, ready to be sacrificed without the least hesitation. Book Description
Excerpt from Old Madame Other Tragedies Miss Barbara! Barbara, honey! Where's this you're hiding at?" cried old Phillis, tying her bandana headgear in a more flamboyant knot over her gray hair and brown face. "Where's this you're hiding at? The Old Madame's after you." And in answer to the summons, a girl clad in homespun, but with every line of her figure the lines, one might fancy, of a wood-and-water nymph's, came slowly up from the shore and the fishing-smacks, with a young fisherman beside her.
