Mate Selection Across Cultures

Mate Selection Across Cultures PDF Author: Raeann R Hamon
Publisher: SAGE
ISBN: 1452237697
Category : Family & Relationships
Languages : en
Pages : 313

Book Description
"A book like this is needed because we teach about couple formation as in some ways ′universal′ and in other ways culturally bound. We have few resources for showing how various countries and cultures are the same and yet different....I am interested in giving students a broad view of relationships and families, and this text would help me." --Susan Hendrick, Texas Tech University "I believe that this is a much needed book. . . . Faculty in family studies, personal relationships and other fields are working to. . . diversify their courses, and this book has the potential to be a true asset in such endeavors." -- Sally A. Lloyd, Miami University Mate Selection Across Cultures explores one of the most basic human endeavors—couple formation—with particular attention to those relationships that lead to marriage. Which characteristics are most prized in a mate? How do variables like personal and cultural values, religious beliefs and practices, political and historical contexts, socioeconomic standing, and interpersonal attraction affect the pairing process? Editors Raeann R. Hamon and Bron B. Ingoldsby examine the enterprise of mate selection and look at the similarities and differences of human bonds around the globe. Mate Selection Across Cultures provides a contemporary, global perspective on the couple formation process in various regions of the world including countries such as Ecuador, Kenya, Israel, and many more. This book is unique in that it explores the vast sub-cultural diversity and variation that exists within any one country and also reviews such concepts as modernization/traditionalism, arranged marriage/free choice, love/family practicality, cohabitation/marriage, and collectivism/individualism. In addition to exploring these dichotomies, the editors delineate the partner selection process and investigate the practices, customs, traditions, rituals, and ceremonies associated with the formalization of these relationships. Features of this text: Expert contributors provide students with an "insider view" of the original research and of the existing literature on the individual countries and regions addressed Includes countries for which there is little or no published family scholarship Case studies, vignettes, and photos of courtship and wedding traditions across cultures enliven the text for readers Uniformity across chapters makes it easy for instructors and students to examine comparisons between and among different cultures Mate Selection Across Cultures is an excellent text for undergraduate and graduate students taking courses in marriage, family, and human relations in Family Studies, Sociology, Psychology, Anthropology, and related disciplines.

Law and Social Change in Ghana

Law and Social Change in Ghana PDF Author: William Burnett Harvey
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 1400875587
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 467

Book Description
While Professor of Law and Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Ghana from 1962 to 1964, the author personally observed the evolving legal order in Ghana during a crucial period in that country's development. Here, he considers statutes and judicial decisions. Working from the premise that law is a value-neutral technique of social ordering and derives its value content from a dominant elite, Professor Harvey places the important Ghanaian constitutional and legal developments in their social context. He concludes that although democratic values have dominated the basic structure of public power, autocratic values have determined the realities of political life in Ghana. Originally published in 1966. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Female Song Tradition and the Akan of Ghana

Female Song Tradition and the Akan of Ghana PDF Author: Kwasi Ampene
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN:
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 274

Book Description
Nnwonkoro is a genre of women's song found among the Akan-speaking peoples of Ghana. It has become a hybrid musical form, incorporating songs and dance movements based on traditional practices alongside others reflecting Christian influence. Nnwonkoro groups perform regularly at funerals, on state occasions, for entertainment, and even in church. In common with other Akan musical traditions, nnwonkoro is transmitted orally and aurally. Based on extensive fieldwork in the Asante and Bono Ahafo regions, and featuring many transcriptions of songs, this book investigates the nature of composition in oral culture, together with issues such as the scope of the poetic imagination and the transformation processes that accompany modernization. This study illuminates the musical style of nnwonkoro in a way which, it is hoped, will facilitate future comparative study of African songs. A CD recording is included.
