Traditional dependence on the use of non-renewable energy resources has led to adverse socioeconomic and environmental complications in almost all of the South Asian economies. Moreover, the geographical locations have made these nations extremely vulnerable to the global climate changes. Thus, a transition from non-renewable to renewable energy consumption is of immense significance from the perspective of sustainable development in this region. Against this backdrop, the focus of this paper is aimed to empirically shed light on the role of greater trade openness and the simultaneous international fund inflows on facilitation of the renewable energy transition across Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. This paper incorporated annual data stemming from 2000 to 2017 and employed the Panel-Corrected Standard Error regression methodology. This paper also estimates the threshold level of GDP growth rate facilitating renewable energy transition in the five aforesaid South Asian economies. Furthermore, panel Granger causality test was applied to distinguish the possible causal associations between the variables in the long run. In light of the estimated results, it is found that trade openness enables renewable energy transition and all the three sources of foreign inflows stimulate positive impacts on renewable energy consumption trends in the selected economies. Moreover, a non-linear relationship between renewable energy transition and GDP growth rate is also revealed from the statistical estimates.

The aim of this paper is to bridge the gap in the literature by empirically shedding light on the impacts of trade openness on facilitation of renewable energy transition in 38 selected countries across South Asia, Southeast Asia, Sub Saharan Africa, Latin America and Caribbean Islands. Annual data in, panel framework, stemming from 2000 to 2014 is incorporated in this paper and the Three-Stage Least Squares (3SLS) panel data estimation methodology is applied. In addition, Granger causality tests, and its pre-requisites are also considered to understand the long run causal associations as well. In light of the estimated results, it is found that trade openness, in general, does not contribute to renewable energy within the economy but it does enhance the energy use efficiency. Moreover, the results in this paper support the fact that inflow of FDI is conducive to the attainment of most of the energy sustainability targets enlisted under the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. The paper also finds evidence suggesting a paradoxical effect of remittances with regard to the overall renewable energy transition. According to the results, the inflow of remittance increases the consumption of renewable energy but it simultaneously reduces its share of the total energy consumption as well. Thus, this paper can be a cornerstone in designing crucial public policies aimed at facilitation of renewable energy use in quest of attainment of energy sustainability across the globe.

Excessive consumption of fossil fuel leading to high environmental cost and the possibility of exhaustion of these nonrenewable energies is a compelling man to switch to alternative energy sources. These resources include renewable energies that are clean and sustainable. Renewable energy is such energy sources that are naturally replenished and are abundantly available. These energy sources beget from solar energy, wind, geothermal and hydro-power plants, etc. Therefore, instead of growing reliance on declining underground resources (fossil fuel resources), it must invest in the development of renewable energy utilization. This paper aims to provide renewable energy consumption patterns, in the long run, incorporating economic growth and fossil fuel energy consumption. In this analysis four, South Asian counties have been taken. These are Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri-Lanka. By analyzing the data from 1990 -2014 with the Johansen Co-integration Method, renewable energy consumption is negatively related to economic growth (except India), whereas fossil fuel energy consumption is increasing with economic growth in the long run for the mentioned South Asian counties. Considering the climate issues, we addressed the opportunities and challenges providing some policy recommendations to increase renewable energy consumption.
