Book Description
Excerpt from Present Day Tracts on Subjects of Christian Evidence, Doctrine, and Morals, Vol. 5 The Series is thus enriched by additions to several of its most important branches-to those of comparative religion, the Divine origin of the religion of the Bible and the Canon of Scripture, and the discussion of the non-theistic systems of the day. Important progress has thus been made in the development of the plan of the Series. The strongest testimonies 'to the value and importance of this enterprise continue to be received by the Society; and their earnest hope and prayer are, that it may continue to be in the future, as it has been in the past, the means alike of confirming the faith and removing the doubts of an ever widening circle of readers in these days of much unsettlement and difficulty. Book Description
Excerpt from Tracts and Essays, Moral and Theological: Including a Defence of the Doctrine of the Divinity of Christ, and of the Doctrine of the Atonement; With Obituaries, Etc, Etc Christian adopts a safe and useful course of practice, whose creed might not bear a strict examination; who could not produce suffi cient reasons for what he believes; nor ana lyze and clearly exhibit the principles by which he is conducted; yet, it might be neither kind nor beneficial to inject suspi cions, and create perplexities, where the predominant bias of the heart is favourable to the gospel of Christ, and the life is not inconsistent with this profession. Our Sa viour gave a lesson of caution and mode ration, when he said to his disciples; I have many things to say unto you, but ye cannot hear them now. Book Description
Excerpt from Plain Tracts for Critical Times: On the Important Subjects of Baptism and Regeneration, &C. With an Especial Reference to the Oxford Tracts, &C. &C We have here a Sincere Christian and a philosopher writing an apology to heathen emperors and senators, who persecuted the Christian church without evidence, or even suspicion of crime. The introduction, therefore, of their modes of faith and practice cannot be expected to be other than general, and in no sort intended to convey the precision of controversial argument, which to them would have been unintelligible and useless. Viewing Justin's description of baptism, therefore, with due candour, we shall be able to understand its true character. Book Description
Excerpt from The Smaller Tracts Besides, an imperfect knowledge of things is often better than no knowledge at all. In this case, if a child do but entér tain a very imperfect idea of God, of his duty, and of a future state, he will get such ideas as will be of some use to him at pre sent, but of much more as he grows up and they will be of much more use then, for having been impressed early, when they could be of little use, or even if they should, at that time, be of no use at all. A reverence for religion, for its general dic tates, or even for the words and forms belonging to it, without any clear ideas, if it be inculcated early, when the mind is tender, and apt to' receive impressions. Book Description
Excerpt from Tracts for the Times, Vol. 1: For 1833-4 I know it is too much the fashion of the times to think any earnestness for ecclesiastical rights unseasonable and absurd, as if it were the feeling of those who live among books and not in the world. But it is our duty to live among books, especially to live by one book, and a very old one and therein we are enjoined to keep that good thing which is committed unto us, to neglect not our gift. And when men talk, as they sometimes do, as if in Opposing them we were standing on technical difficulties instead of welcoming great and extensive benefits which would be the re sult of their measures, I would ask them, (letting alone the ques tion of their beneficial nature, which is a question) whether this is not being wise above that is written, whether it is not doing evil that good may come. We cannot know the effects which will follow certain alterations but we can decide that the means by which it is proposed to attain them are unprecedented and dis respectful to the Church. And when men say, the day is past for stickling about ecclesiastical rights, let them see to it lest they use substantially the same arguments to maintain their position as those who say, The day is past for being a Christian. Lastly, is it not plain that by showing a bold front and defend ing the rights of the Church, we are taking the only course which can make us respected? Yielding will not persuade our enemies to desist from their efforts to destroy us root and branch. We cannot hope by giving something to keep the rest. Of this surely we have had of late years sufficient experience. But by resisting strenuously, and contemplating and providing against the worst, we may actually prevent the very evils we fear. To prepare for persecution may be the way to avert it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Tracts for the Times, Vol. 2: For 1834-5 I say all this, merely for the purpose of suggesting to those who are weak. Some idea of possible modes in which Eternal Wisdom may reconcile the exuberance of His mercy in Christ to the whole race of man, with the placing of it in its fulness in a certain ordained society and ministry. For myself I prefer to rely upon the simple word of truth, of which Scripture is the depository, and since Christ has told me to preach the whole counsel of God, to do so fearlessly and without doubting; not being careful to find ways of smoothing strange appearances in His counsels, and of obviating difficulties, being aware on the one hand that His thoughts are not our thoughts, nor our ways His ways, and on the other, that He is ever justified in His sayings, and overcomes when He is judged. Book Description
Excerpt from Tracts for the Times, Vol. 3 These are the reasons, whether satisfactory or not in the judgment of others, for the style and manner of the earlier Tracts. When, however, from the circumstances of the times or from other causes, more interest seemed to be excited among Churchmen concerning those doctrines which it was their object to enforce, discussion became more seasonable than the simple statements of doctrine with which the series began; and their character accordingly changed.
