Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0323140734

Pages : 475

Book Description
Trace Analysis by Mass Spectrometry deals with trace analysis of solids and liquids by mass spectrometric techniques. Topics include the physics and techniques of electrical discharge ion sources, transmission of ions through double focusing mass spectrometers, and detection and measurement of ions by ion-sensitive plates. The ion sources used are principally electrical discharge type sources. This book is comprised of 14 chapters. The first several chapters focus on the basic physics of electrical discharge ion sources, double focusing mass spectrometry, and the measurement of arrays of mass resolved ion beams by electrical detection methods and with ion sensitive emulsions. The discussion then shifts to the problem of obtaining the chemical composition of the recorded mass resolved ion sample and relating this composition to that of the original sample. The chapters that follow describe specific techniques for analyzing special samples such as insulators, powders, microsamples, biological materials, reactive and low melting point substances, radioactive materials, and gases in solids. The remaining chapters include the use of laser ion sources in the analysis of solids and the analysis of surfaces particularly with sputter ion sources. This book will be of interest to students and practitioners of physics and chemistry.

Trace Analysis of Solids by Mass Spectrometry

Trace Analysis of Solids by Mass Spectrometry PDF Author: Richard E. Honig

Pages : 31

Book Description
The report covers work done to improve the performance of a mass spectrograph in the semi-quantitative analysis of solids. Reproducibility and accuracy were found to be limited by many instrumental factors, as well as sample inhomogeneity. A broad-based evaluation of highest-purity materials, to be used as compacting powders or counterelectrodes, has led to at least one source which can supply gold of adequate purity. The design and construction of a short-pulse ion source was finished which is of particular value in surface studies. Ionsensitive thin-film plates were developed which show marked improvements in line sharpness, halation, signal-to-noise ratio, and vacuum characteristics. (Author).

Analysis of Solids by Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry

Analysis of Solids by Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry PDF Author: David Brian Aeschliman
Publisher:
ISBN:

Languages : en
Pages : 188

Book Description
This dissertation manuscript concentrates on methods to improve the utility of laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) as a rapid and accurate technique for quantitative analysis, forensic matching, and source attribution of solid samples. A solution calibration method for LA-ICP-MS is described that does not require matrix-matched solid standards or prior knowledge of sample composition. Desolvated particles from a microconcentric nebulizer and particles ablated from a localized position on a solid sample are mixed and introduced simultaneously to the ICP-MS. The transport of sample particulates from the ablation cell is measured online with piezoelectric microbalance to provide signal normalization. The relative accuracy of the quantitative analysis of NIST 612 glass and NIST 1264a steel is 3% and 12%, respectively, except for the elements Pb and Bi in steel. LA-ICP-MS is also used with principal components analysis (PCA) to simplify routine comparisons of forensic materials without time-consuming and destructive sample dissolution. The relative concentrations of trace elements in a solid sample are examined to provide a "fingerprint" composition that can be used for definitive identification and source matching of the material. Residue samples are matched to bulk materials using PCA. Variation of laser focus and PCA are also used to diagnose the presence and severity of elemental fractionation, which remains the most significant limitation for accurate quantitative analyses by LA-ICP-MS. High-speed photographs and video of an ICP are used to examine the validity of solution calibration for LA-ICP-MS and to study the trajectories, lifetimes, and emission behavior of particles traversing the plasma under a variety of conditions. No red emission clouds from YO are visible in the ICP when a 20-[mu]L min−1 nebulizer is used to spray a 2000 ppm aqueous yttrium solution, suggesting that the wet droplets from this nebulizer desolvate almost completely before entering the ICP. These desolvated particles appear to atomize and ionize like the small dry particulates from laser ablation. However, some large ablated particulates are observed to fly through the plasma intact, possibly contributing to elemental fractionation. Nevertheless, accurate calibration results using solution standards can be obtained for elements not affected by fractionation.

Trace Analysis

Trace Analysis PDF Author: E. Prichard
Publisher: Royal Society of Chemistry
ISBN: 9780854044177
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 424

Book Description
Trace Analysis is a highly practical book which deals with the science rather than the paperwork of quality assurance systems. Produced as part of the UK Valid Analytical Measurement (VAM) initiative, it provides the analyst with a systematic approach across the broad spectrum of trace analysis, offering practical advice and guidance on methodology and techniques. The book is structured to take the analyst step-by-step through the stages of any trace analysis. The approach is general, being broken down only into types of analyte. Additional chapters explain the application of groups of techniques to each analyte type. Each section contains references to published material which will allow the analyst to obtain further information on specific topics. Throughout the book, the analyst is reminded of pitfalls which lead to unreliable results. This new book therefore offers invaluable advice to analysts in all areas and at all levels, providing practical 'expert' advice on methodology. It will prove indispensable as a single, comprehensive bench guide for analysts in university, college and industrial laboratories.
