Book Description
"Once one of the most Democratic states, Arkansas became ardently Republican in just a few years. While the dramatic shift in the partisan makeup of Arkansas officeholders may appear to have happened almost overnight, the rise of the Republican Party in Arkansas was actually years, if not decades, in the making. From changes in voter preference at the top of the ticket in the 1960s, to generational replacement in Arkansas's political power structure in the 1990s, to a more nationalized and polarized electorate--the ascent of the Republican Party in Arkansas serves as a model for explaining partisan change throughout the country"--

Book Description
Excerpt from Address, to the Republicans of Arkansas The gentleman who penned the above has been imposed on, or he is not as mindful of the truth as a christian gentleman occupying his high position should be. The Republican State Central Committee has not been in session, nor holding secret conclaves. The Republican party will not put a State ticket in the field, nor will it advise or encourage any opposition to the ticket now in the field. It has as much contempt for independent tickets as vou appear to have for grunting and disgruntled democrats. Arkansas Politics and Government

Arkansas Politics and Government PDF Author: Diane D. Blair
Publisher: U of Nebraska Press
ISBN: 0803204892
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 520

Book Description
Published a decade and a half after the late Diane D. Blair s influential book Arkansas Politics and Government, this freshly revised edition builds on her work, which highlighted both the decades of failure by Arkansas's government to live up to the state s motto of Regnat Populus ( The People Rule ) and the positive trends of democracy. Since the first edition, Arkansas has seen the two-term U.S. presidency of a native son, the retirement of players who defined the state s politics in the modern era, the further realignment of the state s electorate, the passage of the nation s most extreme legislative term limits, the complete overhaul of the state s court system, and the declaration that the state s public education system was unconstitutionally inadequate and inequitable. While maintaining the basic structure of Blair s original work with its focus on important historical patterns and the ways in which the past continues to shape the present, the second edition details the causes and consequences of recent changes in Arkansas and asks whether they are profound and permanent or merely transitory variations in symbol and style. Jay Barth argues that although Arkansas currently expresses a healthier representative democracy than throughout most of its history, its political and governmental entities are still sharply limited as effective instruments of the people.

Republican Party Politics and the American South, 1865–1968

Republican Party Politics and the American South, 1865–1968 PDF Author: Boris Heersink
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1108850820
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 381

Book Description
In Republican Party Politics and the American South, 1865–1968, Heersink and Jenkins examine how National Convention politics allowed the South to remain important to the Republican Party after Reconstruction, and trace how Republican organizations in the South changed from biracial coalitions to mostly all-white ones over time. Little research exists on the GOP in the South after Reconstruction and before the 1960s. Republican Party Politics and the American South, 1865–1968 helps fill this knowledge gap. Using data on the race of Republican convention delegates from 1868 to 1952, the authors explore how the 'whitening' of the Republican Party affected its vote totals in the South. Once states passed laws to disenfranchise blacks during the Jim Crow era, the Republican Party in the South performed better electorally the whiter it became. These results are important for understanding how the GOP emerged as a competitive, and ultimately dominant, electoral party in the late-twentieth century South.
