Love in the Time of Hate

Love in the Time of Hate PDF Author: Rakhshanda Jalil
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 8197042691
Category : Political Science

Pages : 434

Book Description
Kabhi hum bhi tum bhi thhe aashna tumhein yaad ho ke na yaad ho Once you and I were friends, whether you remember it now or not--Momin Khan Momin This is a book about love—love for one’s country and for all that goes to make it one we can be proud to belong to. Poetry, it has been said, flourishes when all else is uncertain. With that in mind, renowned literary historian and translator, Rakhshanda Jalil, uses Urdu poetry to look at how the social fabric of secular India is changing. Rakhshanda delves into the past, to the events that have threatened communal harmony, from the bloodletting of partition, or the politics of successive elections, to communal riots, Mumbai, Gujarat and so on, to the present moment, to recent events around Ayodhya, cow slaughter and ‘love jihad’. The book is divided into four sections: politics, people, passions, places. Strewn with delightful, thoughtful Urdu couplets that bring depth, lyricism and gravitas to the narratives, the writer cautions us against current popular sentiments based on hating the ‘other’. Living in an India that now requires us to be resolutely one or the ‘other’, all of us are losing the wonderful capacity to contain within ourselves many seemingly diverse ideologies and beliefs which is a motif that is reiterated through the verses and words in this book. The section titled ‘People’ has the most delightful, charming vignettes of popular icons, from Tipu Sultan and Rani Lakshmi Bai to Gandhi and Nehru, from Ghalib and Majaz to Dilip Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar, viewed through an Urdu lens that makes each person memorable, unique and an advocate of peace and unity. From essays doused in the language of secular patriotism like Har Dil Tiranga, to pieces redolent with nostalgia like Dopahar ki Dhoop Mein, Rakhshanda invokes the power of love, inclusivity and communal harmony that is the trademark of poetry and literature, and which must continue to permeate the way we live our lives if we want to bequeath a meaningful legacy to the generations to come in our country.

Publisher: iUniverse
ISBN: 1491746807
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 214

Book Description
When the Iraq War broke out in the spring of 2003, no one knew what was going on, and no real systems were in place. Author Tenacity had his Department of Defense travel orders, but no destination had been specified beyond Saddams palace in Baghdad. In 2003, few contractors traveled by themselves, and there was no established process. In Six Years in the Middle East, Tenacity shares his experiences as a DoD contractor with the U.S. military in the Middle East from 2003 to 2009. This memoir chronicles his journey as he traveled from Qatar, to Iraq, Kuwait, Afghanistan, Iraq again, Oman, and back to Iraq, while entering into a romantic relationship along the way. With photographs included, this journal offers a unique, in-depth perspective on the Middle East and its conflicts of the early twenty-first century through the eyes of a military man and the common sense of a civilian.

Eid Mubarak!: Islamic Celebration Around the World

Eid Mubarak!: Islamic Celebration Around the World PDF Author: Susan Douglass
Publisher: International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) & Kendall/Hunt Publishing Company
ISBN: 0787204897
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 119

Book Description
This supplementary unit describes the two Islamic celebrations, their background and major features of their observance. It shows what, when, why and how Muslims celebrate on these two occasions, and gives a sense of their inherent values. The unit is also a case study of the unity and diversity of Muslims across the globe, an enjoyable introduction to some customs in selected countries where Muslims live and their geography. Countries were selected to include both majority and minority Muslim populations, to present a range of countries across the globe, and to represent a variety of the many ethnic groups and geographic features that make up the Muslim world community. No attempt has been made to comprehensively cover all countries, cultures or customs, as this is far beyond the scope of a unit for the primary grades. By selecting certain countries, others were necessarily excluded, although they might have served equally well. To rectify this unfortunate shortcoming, activities have been suggested that can enhance coverage to include all the nationalities represented in an individual teacher's classroom. At the same time, such a project increases student participation. All of the customs related here have either been witnessed by the author in various countries, or they were related personally by Muslims from those countries, who also assisted with the illustrations and diagrams for each custom. Finally, no attempt has been made to cover all of the customs of the country selected; rather, they were selected for variety, attractiveness to the target age group and for their relevance to and illustration of certain social studies concepts which are brought out in the teaching suggestions. In terms of the overall objectives of a social studies curriculum for first grade, the teacher will find that many skills and concepts from the first grade year are introduced or reviewed in this unit. It is recommended that the unit be placed near or between the two holidays if these fall during the school year calendar. Alternatively, the unit can serve as an addition to or substitute for standard textbook units on holidays around the world, and offers an interesting contrast and complement to such units. In reading and skill level, it corresponds roughly to the second half of the first grade year, where such holiday units are often placed.
