La Universidad del Cauca, a pocos años de celebrar su primer bicentenario, cuenta con un acervo de tipos móviles incomparable. Este material conforma, desde 2015, el Laboratorio de Documentación e Impresión Tipográfica Entre plomos, adscrito al departamento de Diseño de la Facultad de Artes; en donde, entre otras cosas, se realizan prácticas en impresión tipográfica, lo que le permite consolidar su discurso desde la noción de museo vivo, porque así como un libro está muerto sin lector, el tipo móvil es un sinsentido sin el tipógrafo compositor e impresor. Es así como, la imprenta universitaria -creada por ley el día 18 de marzo de 1826 e inaugurada gracias a la aportación de capitales privados el 8 de mayo de 1832-, adaptándose a las circunstancias de modernización y transformación social e institucional, sigue existiendo, llena de vestigios que actualmente se reconocen como parte del patrimonio gráfico de la región. El libro Tipografías y tipógrafos, acervo tipográfico de la Universidad del Cauca tiene un carácter documental-histórico para la preservación, valoración y divulgación del patrimonio tipográfico, tangible e intangible de la Universidad del Cauca. La primera parte, "Familias tipográficas” es un catálogo tipográfico de material en vía de reconocimiento como bien de Interés Cultural, y la segunda, "Tipógrafos y voces" es una compilación de testimonios de tipógrafos, funcionarios y administrativos del antiguo taller, lo que permite entrever una memoria colectiva e histórica de las artes gráficas en la ciudad de Popayán.
