Ecosophical Aesthetics

Ecosophical Aesthetics PDF Author: Patricia MacCormack
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1350026204
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 272

Book Description
Inspired by the ecosophical writings of Felix Guattari, this book explores the many ways that aesthetics – in the forms of visual art, film, sculpture, painting, literature, and the screenplay – can act as catalysts, allowing us to see the world differently, beyond traditional modes of representation. This is in direct parallel to Guattari's own attempt to break down the 19th century Kantian dialectic between man, art, and world, in favour of a non-hierarchical, transversal approach, to produce a more ethical and ecologically sensitive world view. Each chapter author analyses artworks which critique capitalism's industrial devastation of the environment, while at the same time offering affirmative, imaginative futures suggested by art. Including contributions from philosophers, film theorists and artists, this book asks: How can we interact with the world in a non-dominant and non-destructive way? How can art catalyze new ethical relations with non-human entities and the environment? And, crucially, what part can philosophy play in rethinking these structures of interaction?

Schizoanalysis and Asia

Schizoanalysis and Asia PDF Author: Joff P. N. Bradley
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 1538157764
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 393

Book Description
This book is an update, extension and radicalization of Guattari’s philosophy of the postmedia. It is the first of its kind to comprehensively apply Guattari’s thought on postmedia to post-millennium technological developments. Given the considerable interest in Félix Guattari and Gilles Deleuze’s work and its influence in Asia and South-East Asia and beyond, the book is a timely contribution and update of Guattari’s essential concepts. It offers a fresh approach to applying Guattari and Deleuze to local contexts. Both Félix Guattari’s schizoanalysis and Gilles Deleuze’s philosophy remain excellent tools to decode the politics of postmedia. The book centres around the influence of Guattari’s work on the Japanese archipelago and how Japan itself impacted on the work of Guattari in the 1980s. The book updates Guattari’s work and apply it to the problems which are affecting societies in Asia and beyond. It highlights current research on postmedia by scholars who are working to understand how Japanese society is functioning post-Fukushima and how the country continues to toil from the “geo-trauma” of the real.

Harald Szeemann

Harald Szeemann PDF Author: Harold Szeemann
Publisher: Getty Publications
ISBN: 1606065548
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 418

Book Description
Born in Bern, Switzerland, in 1933, Harald Szeemann was a crucial force in identifying, exhibiting, and writing about the important new movements in postwar contemporary art. This collection of seventy-four texts from the curator’s vast body of written work—which includes essays, lectures, studio notes, reviews, interviews, correspondence, and transcripts—introduces the depth of his method, insight, and inclusive artistic interests. The pieces have been translated from German and French and collected in an informed, authoritative edition, making this the first time Szeemann’s work is accessible in English. The first two sections of this volume republish Szeemann’s anthologies Museum der Obsessionen (1981) and Individuelle Mythologien (1985). The final part assembles important writings from 1986 until his death in 2005 to represent the later years of his career and round out a record of his contribution to and dialogue with later twentieth- century art and artists. The book’s publication coincides with the opening of the Getty Research Institute’s exhibition Harald Szeemann: Museum of Obsessions and complements its catalogue, as well as a contemporaneous satellite show at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, that focuses on Szeemann’s Grandfather exhibition (1974).

Yves Klein

Yves Klein PDF Author: Yves Klein
Publisher: Hatje Cantz
ISBN:
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 256

Book Description
Yves Klein was regarded as a visionary even by his contemporaries. An enfant terrible and outstanding judo enthusiast whose spectacular performances attracted considerable attention in the art world, Klein created a following that only intensified in the wake of his premature death. Having anticipated numerous movements such as Happenings, Performance, Land and Body Art, and Conceptual Art, Klein's manifold oeuvre, realized within a period of only eight years, continues to exercise a decisive influence to this day. This comprehensive retrospective, presented by the Schirn Kunsthalle gallery in Frankfurt, includes over 100 works representing Klein's entire career from his first monochromes in orange, yellow, green, pink, black, and white, to his famous Klein blue monochromes, his sponge relief sculptures, his much-discussed Anthropometries, for which he used female models as live brushes, his monogold paintings, and his last experiments with fire and elements of nature.
