The Tibetan Phrasebook

The Tibetan Phrasebook PDF Author: Chaksham Tsering
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781732584907
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 192

Book Description
The Tibetan Phrasebook is a phrasebook of colloquial Amdo Tibetan. It is geared towards preparing students of Amdo Tibetan to be conversational in the field of study, allowing students to pronounce and understand the phonemically complex language. The Phrasebook should be used with the accompanying audio transcript, available for free on The Tibetan Phrasebook website. Unlike many other manuals of Amdo Tibetan, the emphasis therein is not on the classical didactic grammatical approach, but the practical acquisition of the colloquial language. The Phrasebook also allows students to practice reading the two most widely utilized scripts of Tibetan: the "headed" script used mostly in print, and the "headless" script, typically used in handwriting. The Phrasebook has eight different scenarios common to tourists, students, and researchers of Tibetan regions: Introducing Oneself Eating and Drinking Visiting a Tibetan Family Traveling At the Market At School On the Phone At the Clinic All eight scenarios are dialogues read out-loud by a native Tibetan speaker, followed by a translation by the author, a native English speaker. For best results: listen carefully to the native Tibetan speaker's phrase and repeat as faithfully as possible. The audio is available for free on The Tibetan Phrasebook website. More advanced users can follow along by reading the Tibetan script in either the print or cursive variations. To date, The Tibetan Phrasebook is one of the only English language tools available to learn to read the "headless" (UMed) cursive script of Tibetan.

Tibet

Tibet PDF Author: Michael Buckley
Publisher: Bradt Travel Guides
ISBN: 1784770655
Category : Travel
Languages : en
Pages : 412

Book Description
This new, thoroughly updated edition of Bradt's Tibet encompasses the wider region of ethnic Tibet with more detailed coverage of the Amdo and Kham regions than is found in other guides. It also includes essential information on new border openings and is particularly strong on map data, which is extremely difficult to find in Tibet itself, including new theme maps covering a range of topics, from Tibetan regions to the Three Parallel Rivers UN World Heritage Sites, sacred landscapes, permafrost and major river sources. Bradt's Tibet benefits from years of consistent research. Michael Buckley has been visiting and researching Tibet for more than 30 years and has a raft of books to his name. Thanks to his knowledge and expertise, Bradt's Tibet offers a more extensive language appendix than is found in other guidebooks, plus essential guidelines on cultural etiquette (including a special section on hand gestures to use), local customs and travelling with minimum impact on Tibet's culture and environment. There is also an appendix on fauna and an extensive list of recommended further resources, including books, music, films and even virtual reality Exploring ethnic Tibet independently is a challenge. The 'land of snows' possesses the world's highest peaks (including Everest) and its deepest gorges as well as some of the wildest and roughest road routes in high Asia. Bradt's Tibet provides all the practical information you need to explore ethnic Tibet independently, whether motoring, mountain-biking or trekking. Tibet has always fascinated travellers and armchair travellers because it is so difficult to access due to its remoteness and extreme altitude. Now, under Chinese rule, Tibet is a sensitive destination for Westerners. Visitors needs all the information that they can lay their hands on-and this guidebook provides plenty. With flight routes and rail access to Tibet expanding, and new border crossings opening, Michael Buckley and Bradt's Tibet provide all of the information you need to make the most of a trip.

Tibetan

Tibetan PDF Author: Philip Denwood
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing
ISBN: 9027283060
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 396

Book Description
The Tibetan language comprises a wide range of spoken and written varieties whose known history dates from the 7th century AD to the present day. Its speakers inhabit a vast area in Central Asia and the Himalayas extending into seven modern nation states, while its abundant literature includes much of vital importance to the study of Buddhism. After surveying all the known varieties of Tibetan, including their geographical and historical background, this book concentrates on a phonological and grammatical description of the modern spoken Lhasa dialect, the standard spoken variety. The grammatical framework which has been specially devised to describe this variety is then applied to the written varieties of Preclassical and Classical Tibetan, demonstrating the fundamental unity of the language. The writing system is outlined, though all examples and texts are given in roman script and where appropriate, the International Phonetic Alphabet. The volume includes a comprehensive bibliography.
