Changing Townscapes in North Africa from Late Antiquity to the Arab Conquest

Changing Townscapes in North Africa from Late Antiquity to the Arab Conquest PDF Author: Anna Leone
Publisher: Edipuglia srl
ISBN: 8872284988
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 352

Book Description
"This book examines the complex transition of North Africa from the Late Roman period to the Arab conquest, focusing on three provinces: Zeugitana, Byzacena and Tripolitana. In particular, it considers the continuity and transformation of towns, as a result of economic, political and social changes. The period sees the wide diffusion of Christianity, the imposition of Vandal rule and Arianism, the presence of a new Empire and the Arab/Muslim takeover. It is also a period of archaeological and material transition: physically towns changed and classical structures, in particular, decayed and were reused. The evidence considered here encompasses a wide range of material, including publications from 1800 (Italian and French colonial excavations) to modern times. These data form the basis for a detailed review of archaeological evidence in this geographical area and for the analysis of the processes of evolution that characterised North African cities"--

Ancient Building Technology, Volume 3: Construction (2 vols)

Ancient Building Technology, Volume 3: Construction (2 vols) PDF Author: G.R.H. Wright
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9047430891
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 670

Book Description
Building construction is the subject of this third part of the Ancient Building Technology set (TCH 4 and TCH 7 dealing with the history of building and building materials). Beginning with the formulation of a project (drawings, specifications and estimates of quantities) it goes on to discuss preliminary site surveying and setting out, followed by building site development and its attendant installations, and then examines the disposition of the various building materials (wood, stone, brick, and concrete) in building construction from pre-history to the end of antiquity. The work is intended as a ready reference compendium of information which otherwise would require extended research to come by. It should be of service to all students of antiquity, and a particular convenience to have on hand during archaeological field work. This volume is published in two parts, the first containing the discussion and the second more than 400 illustrations, completing the discussion.

Local Economies?

Local Economies? PDF Author:
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004309780
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 652

Book Description
The Roman economy was operated significantly above subsistence level, with production being stimulated by both taxation and trade. Some regions became wealthy on the basis of exporting low-value agricultural products across the Mediterranean. In contrast, it has usually been assumed that the high costs of land transport kept inland regions relatively poor. This volume challenges these assumptions by presenting new research on production and exchange within inland regions. The papers, supported by detailed bibliographic essays, range from Britain to Jordan. They reveal robust agricultural economies in many interior regions. Here, some wealth did come from high value products, which could defy transport costs. However, ceramics also indicate local exchange systems, capable of generating wealth without being integrated into inter-regional trading networks. The role of the State in generating production and exchange is visible, but often co-existed with local market systems. Contributors are Alyssa A. Bandow, Fanny Bessard, Michel Bonifay, Kim Bowes, Stefano Costa, Jeremy Evans, Elizabeth Fentress, Piroska Hárshegyi, Adam Izdebski, Luke Lavan, Tamara Lewit, Phil Mills, Katalin Ottományi, Peter Sarris, Emanuele Vaccaro, Agnès Vokaer, Mark Whittow and Andrea Zerbini.
