Book Description
As helicopter pilots in the Indian Air Force, we always glimpsed the world through a rotor disc! For many of us who flew before and after the 1971 war, our world view was shaped by our experiences and the training we imbibed. “Through the Rotor Disc” hopes to chronicle the journey of a few helicopter pilots and ground crew in Air Force Station Kumbhirgram in creating history as we helped change the course of the Bangladesh war in 1971. The book is a retelling of our experiences in and out of uniform, hundreds of places we landed and the valiant soldiers and civilians we ferried. We flew the helicopters and landed in every nook and corner of the country. Then we realised that… Pilots do not steer helicopters, destiny does…
Through the Rotor Disc
The Fluid Dynamic Basis for Actuator Disc and Rotor Theories
Author: G.A.M. van Kuik
Publisher: IOS Press
ISBN: 1643682792
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 162
Book Description
The first rotor performance predictions were published by Joukowsky exactly 100 years ago. Although a century of research has expanded the knowledge of rotor aerodynamics enormously, and modern computer power and measurement techniques now enable detailed analyses that were previously out of reach, the concepts proposed by Froude, Betz, Joukowsky and Glauert for modelling a rotor in performance calculations are still in use today, albeit with modifications and expansions. This book is the result of the author's curiosity as to whether a return to these models with a combination of mathematics, dedicated computations and wind tunnel experiments could yield more physical insight and answer some of the old questions still waiting to be resolved. Although most of the work included here has been published previously, the book connects the various topics, linking them in a coherent storyline. “The Fluid Dynamic Basis for Actuator Disc and Rotor Theories” was first published in 2018. This Revised Second Edition (2022) will be of interest to those working in all branches of rotor aerodynamics – wind turbines, propellers, ship screws and helicopter rotors. It has been written for proficient students and researchers, and reading it will demand a good knowledge of inviscid (fluid) mechanics. Jens Nørkær Sørensen, DTU, Technical University of Denmark: “(...) a great piece of work, which in a consistent way highlights many of the items that the author has worked on through the years. All in all, an impressive contribution to the classical work on propellers/wind turbines.” Peter Schaffarczyk, Kiel University of Applied Sciences, Germany: “(...) a really impressive piece of work!” Carlos Simão Ferreira, Technical University Delft: “This is a timely book for a new generation of rotor aerodynamicists from wind turbines to drones and personal air-vehicles. In a time where fast numerical solutions for aerodynamic design are increasingly available, a clear theoretical and fundamental formulation of the rotor-wake problem will help professionals to evaluate the validity of their design problem. ‘The Fluid Dynamic Basis for Actuator Disc and Rotor Theories’ is a pleasure to read, while the structure, text and figures are just as elegant as the theory presented.” The cover shows ‘The Red Mill’, by Piet Mondriaan, 1911, collection Gemeentemuseum Den Haag. Book Description
"Blade Element Rotor Theory presents an extension of the blade element rotor theory to describe the dynamic properties of helicopter rotors. It focuses on the more precise mathematical determination of the forces and moments by which a rotor affects its rotorcraft at specified flight conditions and control positions. The book is intended for graduate students and researchers studying rotor dynamics and helicopter flight dynamics. Analyzing the impact of non-uniform blade parameters, the book covers blade twisting, non-rectangular planform shape of a blade, and inhomogeneous airfoil along a blade"--

IUTAM Symposium on Emerging Trends in Rotor Dynamics
Author: K. Gupta
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400700202
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 558
Book Description
Rotor dynamics is an important branch of dynamics that deals with behavior of rotating machines ranging from very large systems like power plant rotors, for example, a turbogenerator, to very small systems like a tiny dentist’s drill, with a variety of rotors such as pumps, compressors, steam/gas turbines, motors, turbopumps etc. as used for example in process industry, falling in between. The speeds of these rotors vary in a large range, from a few hundred RPM to more than a hundred thousand RPM. Complex systems of rotating shafts depending upon their specific requirements, are supported on different types of bearings. There are rolling element bearings, various kinds of fluid film bearings, foil and gas bearings, magnetic bearings, to name but a few. The present day rotors are much lighter, handle a large amount of energy and fluid mass, operate at much higher speeds, and therefore are most susceptible to vibration and instability problems. This have given rise to several interesting physical phenomena, some of which are fairly well understood today, while some are still the subject of continued investigation. Research in rotor dynamics started more than one hundred years ago. The progress of the research in the early years was slow. However, with the availability of larger computing power and versatile measurement technologies, research in all aspects of rotor dynamics has accelerated over the past decades. The demand from industry for light weight, high performance and reliable rotor-bearing systems is the driving force for research, and new developments in the field of rotor dynamics. The symposium proceedings contain papers on various important aspects of rotor dynamics such as, modeling, analytical, computational and experimental methods, developments in bearings, dampers, seals including magnetic bearings, rub, impact and foundation effects, turbomachine blades, active and passive vibration control strategies including control of instabilities, nonlinear and parametric effects, fault diagnostics and condition monitoring, and cracked rotors. This volume is of immense value to teachers, researchers in educational institutes, scientists, researchers in R&D laboratories and practising engineers in industry.
