This dissertation explores the effect of corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices on the firm and contributes to an understanding of how CSR practices can contribute to companies' competitive advantage. In Chapter 1, I use three randomized field experiments implemented in online labor marketplaces to provide causal evidence of the effect of CSR on employee outcomes that have been shown to be critical to firm performance: salary requirements and employee performance. Workers were recruited for short-term jobs and I manipulated whether or not they received information about the employer's CSR program. I then observed the payment workers were willing to accept for the job and their performance on the job. Surveys administered at the end of the experiments gauging workers' perceptions about the received CSR information also provide insight into the distinct mechanisms through which CSR affects the different employee outcomes. This paper contributes to an understanding of how CSR adds value to the firm and highlights the role of the employee in explaining this relationship. It also demonstrates how online labor markets can be used as settings for field experimental research in strategic management more broadly. In Chapter 2, we examine pro bono work in the legal services industry. Using a screening model we show that law firms use pro bono engagements to gain information about associates' expected productivity as an equity partner. Using a dataset of the top 200 US law firms in 2010 we demonstrate empirical support for our model's predictions. Our findings thus suggest that the conventional wisdom that CSR practices are used to provide information about the quality of the firm to the employee is backwards; rather, we find that pro bono engagements are used to provide information about the quality of the employee to the firm. In Chapter 3, we explore what drives firms to combine poor environmental performance with communication about positive environmental performance, resulting in "greenwashing". Although some explanation of firm greenwashing has been put forth, a comprehensive analysis of the determinants of firm greenwashing is lacking. Drawing from existing work in management, strategy, sociology and psychology, we propose a comprehensive framework that examines the external (both institutional and market), organizational and individual drivers of greenwashing and then use this framework to develop recommendations for managers, policymakers, and NGOs to decrease greenwashing.

In three essays, I examine several facets of corporate social responsibility (CSR). Essay 1 (chapter 1) proposes that alliance network structures can have an effect on the CSR performance of firms. Further, the gender and inside/outside status of directors are also shown to be extremely relevant to the CSR performance of a firm. Overall, essay 1 demonstrates how a variety of factors can influence the CSR output of a firm. Essay 2 (chapter 2) examines pollution as a strategic choice. Given that firms choose to pollute at a given level, I examine how that choice influences the level of CSR in other, non-environmental dimensions by the same firm. Competing hypotheses (both predicting a curvilinear relationship) are tested. The results demonstrate that firms that pollute significantly more or less than the norm are likely to do less non-environmental CSR than firms that pollute closer to the average. Overall this essay contributes by specifying pollution as a strategic choice, and demonstrates how that choice can influence other CSR choices. Finally, essay 3 (chapter 3) examines the phenomenon known as forced ranking in firms. CSR, broadly defined, does examine employee relations. While factors examined are usually employee ownership, etc., an argument could be made to include other HR policies that affect employee morale and cooperation (such as forced ranking). A theoretical essay, this essay proposes three possible responses by managers to being placed under a forced ranking regime, with the majority of those responses classifiable as unintended consequences for firms. Further effects are examined by discussing the effect of these choices on team mental models. This essay contributes by examining the possible unintended consequences to firms by implementing forced ranking, most prominently the potential introduction of managerial deviance.

Within three individual essays, this thesis deals with collaborative and confrontational approaches by NPOs towards companies, and the role these play with respect to corporate responsibility. By drawing on social movement theory, nonprofit-business collaboration literature as well as legitimacy theory, it advances our knowledge regarding two topics: First, this thesis provides answers to the question how successful collaborative and confrontational approaches are individually at influencing households' judgements of companies and of NPOs themselves. Second, it extends our knowledge of interactions between these approaches. With respect to individual effects, this thesis demonstrates that both collaborative and confrontational approaches by NPOs exert a significant effect on households' legitimacy evaluations of companies and subsequently their consumption intentions. Legitimacy also appears as important underlying factor influencing households' support for NPOs, with collaborative NPOs enjoying higher legitimacy and thus support from households than confrontational ones. Concerning interactions between these two types of approaches, this thesis finds confirmation for previous suggestions that contrasting NPO approaches interplay - but demonstrates that such interactions clearly present a double-edged sword. By simultaneously focusing their approach on the same company, both types of NPO suffer a loss in their ability to influence households' perceptions of companies in the way they envision as well as their capability of attaining resources. However, if such approaches are applied sequentially, the picture of these interaction-effects become more positive. These results indicate that NPOs with different approaches towards companies are well advised to work together in a strategic manner in order to maximize their success.
