Three Discourses on Imagined Occasions

Three Discourses on Imagined Occasions PDF Author: Søren Kierkegaard
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 069114074X
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 199

Book Description
Three Discourses on Imagined Occasions was the last of seven works signed by Kierkegaard and published simultaneously with an anonymously authored companion piece. Imagined Occasions both complements and stands in contrast to Kierkegaard's pseudonymously published Stages on Life's Way. The two volumes not only have a chronological relation but treat some of the same distinct themes. The first of the three discourses, "On the Occasion of a Confession," centers on stillness, wonder, and one's search for God--in contrast to the speechmaking on erotic love in "In Vino Veritas," part one of Stages. The second discourse, "On the Occasion of a Wedding," complements the second part of Stages, in which Judge William delivers a panegyric on marriage. The third discourse, "At a Graveside," sharpens the ethical and religious earnestness implicit in Stages's "'Guilty'/'Not Guilty'" and completes this collection.

Three Discourses

Three Discourses PDF Author: Thomas Hobbes
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 9780226345468
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 196

Book Description
The discourses provide the strongest evidence to date for the profound influences of Bacon and Machiavelli on the young Hobbes, and they add a new dimension to the much-debated impact of the scientific method on his thought. These texts, "Upon the Beginning of Tacitus," "Of Rome," and "Of Laws," provide direct access to the intellectual concerns and early influences and questions that eventually led Hobbes to the fully formed philosophy of Leviathan. In the discourses, Hobbes addresses the problem of identifying secular sources of political power that might provide security and stability in a world of constant flux, and works to free himself from some of the traditional foundations of political order.

The Lily of the Field and the Bird of the Air

The Lily of the Field and the Bird of the Air PDF Author: Søren Kierkegaard
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 1400880475
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 127

Book Description
A masterful new translation of one of Kierkegaard's most engaging works In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus tells his followers to let go of earthly concerns by considering the lilies of the field and the birds of the air. Søren Kierkegaard's short masterpiece on this famous gospel passage draws out its vital lessons for readers in a rapidly modernizing and secularizing world. Trenchant, brilliant, and written in stunningly lucid prose, The Lily of the Field and the Bird of the Air (1849) is one of Kierkegaard's most important books. Presented here in a fresh new translation with an informative introduction, this profound yet accessible work serves as an ideal entrée to an essential modern thinker. The Lily of the Field and the Bird of the Air reveals a less familiar but deeply appealing side of the father of existentialism—unshorn of his complexity and subtlety, yet supremely approachable. As Kierkegaard later wrote of the book, "Without fighting with anybody and without speaking about myself, I said much of what needs to be said, but movingly, mildly, upliftingly." This masterful edition introduces one of Kierkegaard's most engaging and inspiring works to a new generation of readers.

Discourses on Livy

Discourses on Livy PDF Author: Niccolò Machiavelli
Publisher: e-artnow
ISBN: 8026885007
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 436

Book Description
Machiavelli saw history in general as a way to learn useful lessons from the past for the present, and also as a type of analysis which could be built upon, as long as each generation did not forget the works of the past. In "Discourses on Livy" Machiavelli discusses what can be learned from roman period and many other eras as well, including the politics of his lifetime. This is a work of political history and philosophy written in the early 16th. The title identifies the work's subject as the first ten books of Livy's Ab urbe condita, which relate the expansion of Rome through the end of the Third Samnite War in 293 BC. Niccolò di Bernardo dei Machiavelli (1469 – 1527) was an Italian diplomat, politician, historian, philosopher, humanist, and writer. He has often been called the father of modern political science. He was for many years a senior official in the Florentine Republic, with responsibilities in diplomatic and military affairs. He served as a secretary to the Second Chancery of the Republic of Florence from 1498 to 1512, when the Medici were out of power. He wrote his most well-known work The Prince in 1513, having been exiled from city affairs.

Kierkegaard's Writings, XV, Volume 15 PDF Author: Søren Kierkegaard
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 1400832330
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 459

Book Description
In his praise for Part I of Upbuilding Discourses in Various Spirits, the eminent Kierkegaard scholar Eduard Geismar said, "I am of the opinion that nothing of what he has written is to such a degree before the face of God. Anyone who really wants to understand Kierkegaard does well to begin with it." These discourses, composed after Kierkegaard had initially intended to end his public writing career, constitute the first work of his "second authorship." Characterized by Kierkegaard as ethical-ironic, Part One, "Purity of Heart Is to Will One Thing," offers a penetrating discussion of double-mindedness and ethical integrity. Part Two, "What We Learn from the Lilies in the Field and from the Birds of the Air," humorously exposes an inverted qualitative difference between the learner and the teacher. In Part Three, "The Gospel of Sufferings, Christian Discourses," the philosopher explores how joy can come out of suffering.

Publisher: Clearfield Group
ISBN:
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 172

Book Description
"Awaken to the fact that your thought and feeling in the past have built—created—the inharmony of your world today. Arise! I say, Arise! and walk with the Father—the “I AM”—that you may be free from these limitations. Life, in all Its Activities everywhere manifest, is God in Action; and it is only through lack of the understanding of applied thought and feeling that mankind is constantly interrupting the pure flow of that Perfect Essence of Life which would, without interference, naturally express Its Perfection everywhere."

Three Discourses of the Buddha

Three Discourses of the Buddha PDF Author:
Publisher: Library of Tibetan Works and Archives
ISBN: 9387023370
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 32

Book Description
This publication presents three of the earliest recorded discourses offered by the Buddha. These seventy-two original verses of the Buddha unveil some of the most essential and quintessential teachings in Buddhism. The first discourse Rajadesananama-Mahayana Sutra I deals with the sources of sufferings of samsara; the second discourse Rajadesananama-Mahayana Sutra II discusses the method of subduing oneself, and the third discourse Silasamyukta Sutra shows the essence of moral conduct. By retaining a storytelling framework, the discourses avoid abstraction but instead illustrate practical influences upon individuals who are searching for peace of mind and the ultimate truth. The cover of the book is designed to convey the symbolic message of impermanence which is also the concluding stanza of the book: "Enjoyable things are compared to waterfall While life in a house is like drifting in a boat As a flower, so indeed this human body And as a bubble , so is this human life."
