Baptism has been a contested practice from the very beginning of the church. In this volume, Ben Witherington rethinks the theology of baptism and does so in constant conversation with the classic theological positions and central New Testament texts. Word, Water, and Spirit
Author: John V. Fesko
Publisher: Reformation Heritage Books
ISBN: 1601782535
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 581
Book Description
"This book represents a substantial accomplishment, one that provides a useful resource for those wanting to deepen their understanding of the sacraments, particularly baptism. Reflecting a massive amount of research, against the background of an in-depth survey of various views of baptism in church history, Fesko provides an extensive exegetical and biblical-theological study of the covenantal and eschatological significance of baptism followed by systematic theological reflections on key issues like baptism as a means of grace, the efficacy of baptism, the biblical warrant for infant baptism (and against paedocommunion) and the importance of baptism for the church. One need not agree with his reflections at every point to benefit from his considerable labors." - Richard B. Gaffin, Jr., Professor of Biblical and Systematic Theology, Emeritus, Westminster Theological Seminary

Thoughts on Water-Baptism (Classic Reprint)
Author: Robert Jowitt
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781333792671
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 30
Book Description
Excerpt from Thoughts on Water-Baptism Whilst fully prepared to admit that the silence of one of the sacred writers on any particular subject, ought not in any degree to invalidate what another has said on the same subject, it is notwithstanding worthy of remark, that whilst many of the canonical epistles are entirely silent on this subject, others allude to it only in an in direct manner, and none speak of it as a binding ordinance of perpetual obligation. The apostle Paul, in giving special instructions to Timothy and Titus respecting the churches 'under their care, does not even hint at water baptism, neither does he give any instructions about bap tizing, in his epistles to the believers at Rome, Corinth, Galatia, Ephesus, Philippi, Colosse, or Thessalonica. In his epistle to the Hebrews, one great object seems to have been to prove that all ceremonial worship was at an end; that all types were fulfilled in Christ the antitype. If whilst the types of the Mosaic dispensation were done away in Christ, a new outward ordinance had been set up as a part of the religion of Jesus, would not the apostle under such circumstances have not only expressly men tioned it, but been very particular in his instructions respecting it, and yet in his epistle of thirteen chapters we find not one word on the subject, except that in chap. Vi. 2, he simply mentions The doctrine of Baptisms. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Baptism
Author: Michael Green
Publisher: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing
ISBN: 1467465615
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 128
Book Description
Michael Green offers biblical and ecumenical answers to disputed questions about baptism. The gateway into the church. An individual’s testimony to faith and repentance. The reception of the Holy Spirit. The meaning of baptism varies wildly between different Christian traditions. Seeking common ground, Michael Green turns to Scripture to assess the varieties of baptismal theology. Though Green assents that baptism is no substitute for saving faith, he endorses infant baptism, confronting common objections head-on. He also addresses the related problems of confirmation and rebaptism. Green’s lively and clear argument will challenge and intrigue readers of all denominations.
