Military Psychiatry in Peace and War (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Charles Stanford Read

Book Description
Excerpt from Military Psychiatry in Peace and War Notwithstanding the great opportunities for the study of mental disease arising under active service conditions during the late European War, little English literature on the sub ject has been published. Though it is more or less universally found that no special war psychosis exists, it has been evident that the environment and circumstances of warfare do tend to bring about certain mental reactions, which, though seen in other situations, are not there so common. Unfor tunately the exigencies of war-time precluded most medical officers from devoting time to special study, and my work, as seen in the following pages, has been the product of labour only possible at intervals of leisure now and again. The statistical work at a Clearing H05pital is fraught with much difficulty, for the following up of cases which were dis persed over various parts of the United Kingdom is not a task to be lightly undertaken. My medical work during the war has been exceptionally fortunate, in that I have been able to gain a wide experience of the manifold mental ah normalities met with. Previous to my post at D Block, Netley, I had charge of neurological wards, and I have had the privilege since of visiting all the War Mental H05pitals in France and Great Britain. My thanks are due to the War Office authorities for giving me official permission and grant ing me all facilities for those visits. To the various medical officers who so courteously tendered me all available informa tion, and thus helped in my work, I express my indebtedness. Book Description
Excerpt from Reflections on War and Death Even science has lost her dispassionate impartiality. Her deeply embittered vo taries are intent upon seizing her weapons to do their share in the battle against the enemy. The anthropologist has to de clare his opponent inferior and degenerate, the psychiatrist must diagnose him as men tally deranged. Yet it is probable that we are affected out of all proportion by the evils of these times and have no right to compare them with the evils of other times through which we have not lived. Disalienation

Disalienation PDF Author: Camille Robcis
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 022677788X
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 233

Book Description
From 1940 to 1945, forty thousand patients died in French psychiatric hospitals. The Vichy regime’s “soft extermination” let patients die of cold, starvation, or lack of care. But in Saint-Alban-sur-Limagnole, a small village in central France, one psychiatric hospital attempted to resist. Hoarding food with the help of the local population, the staff not only worked to keep patients alive but began to rethink the practical and theoretical bases of psychiatric care. The movement that began at Saint-Alban came to be known as institutional psychotherapy and would go on to have a profound influence on postwar French thought. In Disalienation, Camille Robcis grapples with the historical, intellectual, and psychiatric meaning of the ethics articulated at Saint-Alban by exploring the movement’s key thinkers, including François Tosquelles, Frantz Fanon, Félix Guattari, and Michel Foucault. Anchored in the history of one hospital, Robcis's study draws on a wide geographic context—revolutionary Spain, occupied France, colonial Algeria, and beyond—and charts the movement's place within a broad political-economic landscape, from fascism to Stalinism to postwar capitalism.
