Thomas Lanier Clingman PDF Author: Thomas E. Jeffrey
Publisher: University of Georgia Press
ISBN: 9780820320236
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 484

Book Description
Thomas Lanier Clingman: Fire Eater from the Carolina Mountains is the first book-length biography of one of the most important, colorful, and controversial figures in nineteenth-century American life. A man of enormous intellect and intense ambition whose ultimate goal was nothing less than the presidency, Clingman was a lawyer, entrepreneur, Civil War general, inventor, amateur scientist, explorer, and, as a U.S. congressman and senator, one of the foremost champions of southern rights. Thomas E. Jeffrey's explanation of how a leading advocate of this cause could thrive within an environment where slavery was only a marginal institution provides fresh insights into the political culture of southern Appalachia, the character of the southern rights movement, and the coming of the Civil War.

Historic Shallow Ford in Yadkin Valley: Crossroads Between East and West PDF Author: Marcia D. Phillips

Pages : 160

Book Description
Shallow Ford, the natural rock path across the Yadkin River, served as the gateway for pioneers to the western North Carolina frontier and as a stage for history. The ford was the site of the Battle of Shallow Ford in the Revolutionary War and Stoneman's Raid during the Civil War. The eye of the needle for General Cornwallis in the Race to the Dan, it was also the silent witness to the Great Wagon Road and the trans-Appalachian migration led by local son Daniel Boone. Bypassed for the last hundred years, Shallow Ford faded from view but remains a landmark of another era. Local historian Marcia D. Phillips recounts the history of a time when safe passage across the river provided the way to reach the American future that lay beyond.

Clingman's Brigade in the Confederacy, 1862-1865

Clingman's Brigade in the Confederacy, 1862-1865 PDF Author: Frances Harding Casstevens
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 9780786413003
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 270

Book Description
On November 11, 1862, Brigadier General Thomas Lanier Clingman, despite a lack of formal military training, was named commander of four regiments sent to North Carolina to prevent Federal troops from making further inroads into the state. Clingman has been called one of North Carolina's most colorful and controversial statesmen, but his military career received little attention from his contemporaries and has been practically ignored by later historians. This work determines the effect Clingman's Brigade had on various battles and in various defensive positions. It also corrects falsehoods by providing a more accurate portrayal of Clingman, the brigade, and the problems it faced. Chapters are devoted to Clingman in his civilian life and his military life, battles fought by the brigade, and the four regiments. Appendices include Clingman's two order books (detailing general and specific orders), a roster of his officers, and miscellaneous letters.

Book Description
Located in the western piedmont of North Carolina, Yadkin County was hardly a hotbed of rebellion at the start of the Civil War. Many of the 1,200 men from Yadkin who served in the Confederate Army did so with distinction, but a number deserted. Some of these holed up in the Bond School House, and when the militia attempted to arrest them, four were killed and several others were wounded. This is a comprehensive accounting of how the county responded to the Civil War and the effect it had on Yadkin's citizens, civilian and military alike.

Book Description
Excerpt from Descendants of the Clingman Family During the past few years I have been trying to complete a list of our branch of the above family name, and have located quite a number of descendants belonging to our branch, whioh is traced bach to. My great grand-father Peter Klingman, (l752-l848) who lived most his life in Union County Pennsylvania. He married Margaret Englehart, their children being: Jacob, Magdelena, Peter, George, John, Danieh, (my grand-father) Michael, Samuel and Elizabeth. Samuel and family moved to Lake County Illinois about 1844 and in 1846 my father Samuel moved to the same County and as his uncle had changed to the English form of spelling, viz: Clingman my father dld likewise. I have listed most of the families of grand-father brothers and sisters, but am not certain about his brother Peters'folks and have none of his brother Georges, who is said to have moved to Ohio and had quite a family. I have also quite a list of descendants of John Michael Clingman, (1734-1816f) who was a Captain in the Revolutionary War. And a Alexander Klingeman, whose grand-son Thomas Lanier Clingman was a u.s Senator from.north Oarolina in 1860. Another branch starts with Cornelius Klingman whose descendants are in Indiana and west. Among other records is George Klingaman died 1820) wifes name Catherine (1747-1834), their son Georg 778-1856)married Catherine Hostetler, some of their descendants are in California There are several other families whose names have not been traced into any of the above branches, and we have not yet learned the relationship of our branch-if any-to the others.
