Book Description
Excerpt from Twenty-Ninth Annual Report of the City of Rochester, New Hampshire: For the Year Ending December Thirty-First Nineteen Hundred and Twenty We have assembled here this morning, and have taken upon ourselves a solemn oath to perform to the best of our ability the duties pertaining to these honorable places. We are not here for pleasure or profit to ourselves, but to conduct the affairs of our City on sound business principles. To that end we must devote our time, and thoughts, however inconvenient it may be to us. We must appreciate the confidence placed in us by the Citizens of Rochester, and to them we are directly answerable. In short, gentlemen, I shall advocate business methods in all our transactions and trust that you will help me to perform the same. Finance The question of finances should be carefully considered. It is a subject of deep concern, and as there is more money asked for this year than ever before, we should exact full value for every dollar expended. The following is a financial statement prepared for me by our City Clerk. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Ninth Annual Report of the City of Rochester, New Hampshire: For the Year Ending December 31st, 1900 And while I desire to thank all citizens, irrespective of party, for their more than generous support at the polls, I do not feel it a personal tribute to myself, but rather as an evidence of the cordial relations that have existed for so long in our city between the two parties and by which we have been able to secure the services of many of our best citizens that would not enter an unseemly struggle for office, but when called by unanimous voice of all, have sacrificed their personal feelings and given their best services to our city. This is as it should be; and in filling the various offices Which it is our duty to do, the qualifications and fitness of the candidates for the various offices, should be considered by you, rather than to what party they belong. The responsibilities and duties which we assume will require the exercise of our best thought and care, and the citizens of our city have a right to expect our best efforts in their behalf, and I know I voice your sentiments when I say, we will do the best we can. Book Description
Excerpt from Thirty-Seventh Annual Report of the City of Rochester, New Hampshire: For the Year Ending December 31st, 1928 After looking over the accounts of other cities of the State, I am pleased with the accounts of the City of Rochester. I think the members of the government of Rochester have given much thought and work to their various departments. The affairs have been handled efficiently and economically. For the dollars spent, we stand high in value received. The financial affairs are in good condition. The Committees of the Council have given much time to their work, and this coming year I shall expect them to spend as much time, or even more. Personally I am glad to see that citizens generally are taking so much interest in the affairs of the City. This interest often takes the'form of criticism, but criticism we all should welcome, for from constructive criticism ideas of value are obtained. Book Description
Excerpt from Sixty-Ninth Annual Report of the City of Rochester, New Hampshire: For the Year Ending December 31, 1960 We have as our primary concern all the citizens of Roches ter. The elections are over and we should forget them. Let us all remember that we were elected to serve all the people. It should be kept constantly in mind that future proposals should be measured by the yardstick whether or not this is good for the entire city and not for the benefit of a special few. As the holding of our present tax rate is of major concern to all of us, we should endeavor to trim our expenditures to meet revenue income. The efficiency and equity of our assessment can be improved by having a full time assessor. I trust that you will give this important question a great deal of consideration. The Industrial Committee has made great progress and this vital program should be continued for our mutual benefit. The Planning Board has assumed great importance during the past year. As the program ends in April, I believe we should continue it with a part or full time director. The Public Works Department has its many problems. There is always need to replace equipment and a penny wise and pound foolish program is not workable, as we have seen. Book Description
Excerpt from Thirty-Second Annual Report of the City of Rochester, New Hampshire: For the Year Ending December 31st, 1923 Gentlemen of the City Council: My address to you today will be brief. The citizens of Rochester have elected you and I to take charge of the City's affairs for the year 1924. I appreciate very much the honor conferred upon me, and I realize the responsibility of my position deeply. The one gratifying feature, however, is to know that you are to share that responsibility with me. I know I speak your mind when I say, "We want to make good," therefore, I plead for unity. With your assistance, your Mayor can accomplish most everything required of him. Without your cooperation his work will be difficult. The tax payers of this City will watch us closely; we will be criticised, but if we are honest with each other and honest with the City, then as this year draws to a close we can look with plasure on the service we have rendered. We live in an age of action; the public demands service; let us continue the good work by helping to make Rochester a larger and more progressive City in which to live. Gentlemen, in the discharge of my duties I pledge to you to do the right as God giveth me to see the light.
