C., Commencing June 17th, 1903 The Twenty-ninth Annual Meeting of the North Carolina Dental Society was called to order in Winston-Salem, N. C., June 17, 1903, at 8:30 p.m., by the President, Dr. J. H. Benton. After a musical selection by the Tillinghast Orchestra, the meeting was opened with prayer by the Rev. Dr. H. A. Brown. Mayor O. B. Eaton delivered the address of welcome, as follows: Address Of Welcome. Mr. President, Officers and Members of the North Carolina Dental Association, Ladies and Gentlemen: No more pleasing duty has ever been imposed upon me than that which comes to me tonight, in welcoming to our city this honorable body of men, who are representing such a great and growing organization. Words can but ill convey the general appreciation we feel in having you as our guests. We deem this an occasion of more than ordinary interest, and it is therefore my privilege and pleasure to bring to you the most cordial greetings. So strongly do I feel the difficulty of saying anything worthy of this gathering that I should have been disposed to defer it, had I felt at liberty to decline the service to which I have been invited. I wish, however, by compliance, to express my admiration and high regard for the Dental Association, and I wish to acknowledge my sense of obligation to those through whose industry and skill suffering humanity has been made to rejoice, and faces writhing in pain to break forth into the loudest praise and turn their woe into bright songs of gladness. I wish still more, Mr. President, to express my joy at the progress that you have been making through this organization, not only for your own improvement, but to raise the standard of efficiency for those who would seek this field of labor. Mr. President and Gentlemen of the North Carolina Dental Society: Through the courtesy of your local committee, I have been invited to extend a word of welcome to the North Carolina Dental Society and as usual, I find myself quaking in the knees as I confront these true "Knights of The Forceps." As I look into your faces and contemplate your gentlemanly, quiet mien, it seems incompatible with human temperament that you should be the genii of that horrible instrument of torture, which, form a layman's view point I would modestly describe as a slight improvement over the engines of the Spanish inquisition. A composite of the road-roller, rock-crusher, steam derrick, and electric boiler drill, to which useful inventions your engine is a pocket edition of most worthy quality and efficient force, and if these references should bore you, please remember the old adage about the worm turning, and understand that I am but yielding to a frailty of human nature, and striking back, for I have been bored at your hands more than once. Since my days of juvenile anguish, when a top-cord connected my aching molar to the knob, and I crouched in holy terror behind the door, awaiting a jerk form the other side, which due to my expiring courage, was not allowed to come, I have had the same cordial, easy feeling in meeting your profession that a culprit enjoys in passing in the vicinity of a policeman. You are a princely lot of fellows though, and whenever I am able to make a hurried inventory with the tip of my tongue, and find no building sites there, I am awfully glad to run with you.
