Book Description
Cellular drug resistance is a major limitation to the success of chemotherapy of leu kemia and lymphoma. The importance of this has now been recognized by both clinicians and scientists. It is of utmost importance to bridge the gap between laboratory and clinic in this field of research. This is the main purpose of the series of International Symposia on Drug Resistance in Leukemia and Lymphoma. These are held every three years in Am sterdam, The Netherlands, since 1992. This book contains the proceedings of the third of these meetings, organised in 1998. The book covers all important aspects of drug resistance in leukemia and lymphoma, both in the form of extensive reviews as in manuscripts describing original data. General mechanisms of resistance are discussed, including the drug resistance related proteins p glycoprotein, MRP (multi-drug resistance protein) and LRP (lung resistance protein), and the role of glutathione and glutathione-S-transferases. Moreover, more drug type-specific mechanisms of resistance are a topic, such as for glucocorticoids and antifolates. Much in formation is provided on apoptosis and its regulators, and on the results of cell culture drug resistance assays. Several papers focus on the modulation or circumvention of drug resistance.

Proceedings of the 3rd International Congress on Neo-Adjuvant Chemotherapy

Proceedings of the 3rd International Congress on Neo-Adjuvant Chemotherapy PDF Author: Pierre Banzet
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 2817807820
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 474

Book Description
This book includes some selected presentations given at the 3rd International Congress on Neo-Adjuvant Chemotherapy which was held in Paris from February 6th to February 9th, 1991. It was attended by over 2000 physicians from around the world and by 700 nurses. Its organisation was saddened by the untimely death of Professor Claude Jacquillat on October 12th, 1990. It was further complicated in January and February 1991 by the gulf events which led some guests to cancel their participation. However with the outstanding help of the two presidents cho sen by Claude Jacquillat before his death, Pierre Banzet from Paris and James F. Holland from New York, the organizers could set up an exciting meeting confirming the impact of neo-adjuvant chemotherapy on relatively new indi cations such as non-small lung cancers, bladder cancer, esophagal cancer, cer vix cancer, etc ... It is noteworthy that a contradictory debate on primary chemotherapy in non-small lung cancer turned into a consensus conference. In breast cancer, the downstaging induced by primary chemotherapy is ack nowledged by all and the conviction that Jacquillat defended so heartily that breast preservation should be proposed to all patients with breast cancer what ever their tumour size is shared now by more and more people. A special emphasis was given to new drugs, new combination, new access (locoregional therapy) and new developments such as that of growth factors and of interleukin 2.

New Aspects in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Hodgkin’s Disease

New Aspects in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Hodgkin’s Disease PDF Author: Volker Diehl
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642837816
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 312

Book Description
In the field of Hodgkin's lymphoma, many new data have been collected during the last decade both on the cell of origin of this disease and on more effective therapies to cure the majority of pa tients even in the advanced stages. Therefore, it seems to be justi fied to compile these new data in a special volume of Recent Re sults in Cancer Research. This volume summarizes the contribu tions presented at the First International Symposium on Hodgkin's Disease that took place in Cologne (FRG) on October 2-3, 1988. There is little doubt that the Hodgkin and Reed-Sternberg (H and RS) cells and their variants represent the malignant population in Hodgkin's lymphoma; however, there is still a fierce debate as to the possible cell of origin of Hand RS cells. Many of the problems confounding earlier research into this question were related to the difficulty or virtual impossibility, of obtaining purified populations of Hand RS cells. Most of the recent progress stems from the establishment of permanent cell lines of Hand RS cells in culture.
