Major advances have been made in recent years in clarifying the molecular properties of the cytochrome P-450 system. These advances stem, in practical terms, from the generally recognized importance of cytochrome P-450 in the metabolism of drugs and in the bioactivation of xenobiotics to toxic products. The fascinating multiplicity and differential regulation of cytochrome P-450 isozymes, and their ability to catalyze extraordinarily difficult chemical transformations, have independently drawn many chemists and biochemists into the P-450 circle. Progress in the field, from a technical point of view, has been propelled by the de velopment of reliable procedures for the purification of membrane-bound enzymes, by the growing repertoire of molecular biological techniques, and by the development of chemical models that mimic the catalytic action of P-450. As a result, our understanding of the P-450 system is moving from the descriptive, pharmacological level into the tangible realm of atomic detail. The rapid progress and multidisciplinary character of the cytochrome P-450 field, which cuts across the lines that traditionally divide disciplines as diverse as inorganic chemistry and genetics, have created a need for an up-to-date evaluation of the advances that have been made. It is hoped that this book, with its molecular focus on the cytochrome P-450 system, will alleviate this need. The authors of the individual chapters have strived to emphasize recent results without sacrificing the background required to make their chapters comprehensible to informed nonspecialists.

This book is about the author’s (my) life including my ancestors who came into Colonial America from Northern Ireland in 1746. This book is also about me growing up on the farm. There are episodes given such as the time when I was about 10 years old and had the chore of taking two gallons of skim milk to feed about eight 200 pounds pigs their desert so to speak. On at least one occasion, the pigs surrounded me and ran into the pail of skim milk resulting in me getting a skim milk bath. My educational journey started in a two-room country school where the eighth grade included four girls and me. My educational journey continued through high school, University undergraduate and graduate school where the high light of my learning was the spookiness of quantum physics. My goal began to be realized when I started doing and leading biomedical research activity in 1974 and then after 30 plus years of research and over 200 peer reviewed research papers I was awarded the Discovery Research Metal from the research society I helped found several years earlier. It is important to note that my relative that came from Northern Ireland was a Loyalist Colonel in command of a militia in the Revolutionary War. Several of my close relatives were in the Civil War on the Union side. Many of their graves are within one-half mile of the farm where I grew up. At least two of my close relatives died in a Confederate prison in Virginia. President Abe Lincoln’s birthplace was about sixty-five miles away from the home farm.

Advances in Radiation Biology, Volume 12, provides an overview of the state of knowledge in the field of radiation biology. Environmental matters are continuing to produce surprises and remain sources of concern. The safe disposal of radioactive waste still is a major problem facing the nuclear power industry. A possible solution is discussed here. New information about the survivors from radiation exposure at Hiroshima and Nagasaki has emphasized the consequences of brain damage in the developing embryo, the importance of late radiation carcinogenesis, and the roles played by age and sex in human radiation responses. It also is prompting an increasing number of scientists involved in radiation protection to question the use of small animal models to quantify late radiation effects in humans. Contributions to this volume deal with experimental and other aspects of those problems. Finally, increasing confirmation of the dose rate response for densely ionizing radiations has highlighted the hazard they pose to humans in the terrestrial and extraterrestrial environments. Therefore, the intention of agencies in the United States and elsewhere to generate better funded and more scientifically perspicacious programs of space radiation biology is welcome. Possible interests of the military in that regard are also considered.
