Faith of Our Fathers

Book Description
Historian Perry Miller said that to the Puritans, "History is a memorial of the mercies of God, so that posterity may know them, remember them, and hymn His praises." Eighteenth-century historian Joseph Milner desired that his church history be a "celebration of piety." Today, however, works of church history often fail to inspire or to edify believers. One of the goals of this book is to remedy this failure of modern church histories. The series of sketches gathered here enlightens Christians about their heritage and uplifts them by the godly examples of previous generations. The great men of church history are represented here: Augustine, Wycliffe, Luther, Calvin, Knox, Bach, Wesley, Whitefield, Spurgeon, and others. Also found here are the great themes of church history: the persecution of believers, the role of women, the history of religious art, and numerous other topics. The authors write on a level accessible to the layman, but they neither trivialize their subjects nor indulge in slipshod research. "History is a memorial of the mercies of God" -- that sentiment is echoed by the authors of this volume. Throughout the book runs the theme of God's sovereignty in history and His goodness to man. Across the pages of history, Christians may write, as J.S. Bach did on all his music, Soli Deo gloria! "To God alone the glory!" --

Book Description
The post-millennial vision of nineteenth century America led to greater educational opportunities for women, but these were focused on women's domestic efficacy in developing "messianic mothers" to help create the kingdom of God on earth. Yet, by embracing the doctrine of sanctification, Wesleyan Holiness women were able to move from "women's sphere" (domesticity) to the public sphere (public ministry), which they had come to see as their intended place. Not only did they make this shift for themselves, but they created Christian institutions of higher education that provided opportunities for both women and men to prepare for public ministry. At the beginning of the twentieth century, a new force would enable women to further demonstrate their equality in the work of the Lord. In 1901, the Pentecostal movement was ushered in when Agnes Nevada Ozman became the first person in the modern era to speak in tongues. This movement saw the promise and fulfillment of equal empowerment of men and women for service by the Holy Spirit, which sent individuals throughout the world to further the kingdom of God. As the theological shift from a postmillennial to a premillennial view occurred, opportunity became necessity as priority was given to the creation of schools to prepare ministers to reach lost souls before the return of Jesus. The founding of such schools was pioneered by Wesleyan Holiness and Pentecostal women who carried the torch as their movement grew into the twentieth century. This book compiles the inspiring stories of some of the most notable women who, from society's perspective stepped outside established roles to claim a significant place in the history of American higher education.

Graham Scroggie (1877-1958): The Unusual Keswick Speaker God never repeats Himself in human experience, and it is refreshing to mark these saints as they ventured their all upon God and left us individual histories which enrich the spiritual kingdom by the delightful variety we discover in all God's "other" creations. We do not submit these sketches that they should be imitated in detail as to their search for God, or as to their evidence of that attainment. We pray rather that their faith and courage, in proving and knowing God, might encourage us to realize there is no limit, except in ourselves, to what we might discover of His kingdom while here in "time." Our situation today is much like that which existed in the time of the Judges: "Another generation grew up after them, who did not know the Lord or the work that he had done for Israel." (Judges 2:10). Such ignorance in those days issued in God's people doing evil and turning to false religion. This book describes giants of faith---people who did exploits because "they knew their God." Such devotion as we read about shames our shallowness and our failure to make a vacuum for God in the busy materialistic scramble for higher living standards. We have expensive homes and luxury cars but know little of the vast riches and resources available to one who takes time to know and understand. Our ideals are to low, and our zeal so lukewarm, and our stocks of grace so pitifully small that we need to remember great saints who all remind us, we too can make our lives sublime, and departing leave behind us, footprints in the sands of time, as Longfellow wrote: Footprints that perhaps another Sailing o'er life's solemn mane, Some forlorn and shipwrecked brother Reading may take heart again.---from the foreword.
