Examining how stories are changed, added to, or altered as they are passed down over time, the book explores how time alters memory. To achieve this, interviews with family members and community members were conducted over the phone, and the writer excavated family photo albums, as well as listened to a cassette tape recorded by relatives of fiddle, guitar, and piano music. The text also explores the pressures and anxieties of growing up in a religious community whose ideals sit in contrast to an individual's personal growth, self acceptance while grappling with complex issues of identity, more specifically a homosexual identity as an artist.
