Introduction to the Thermodynamics of Materials

Introduction to the Thermodynamics of Materials PDF Author: David R. Gaskell
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1498757030
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 549

Book Description
Maintaining the substance that made Introduction to the Thermodynamic of Materials a perennial best seller for decades, this Sixth Edition is updated to reflect the broadening field of materials science and engineering. The new edition is reorganized into three major sections to align the book for practical coursework, with the first (Thermodynamic Principles) and second (Phase Equilibria) sections aimed at use in a one semester undergraduate course. The third section (Reactions and Transformations) can be used in other courses of the curriculum that deal with oxidation, energy, and phase transformations. The book is updated to include the role of work terms other than PV work (e.g., magnetic work) along with their attendant aspects of entropy, Maxwell equations, and the role of such applied fields on phase diagrams. There is also an increased emphasis on the thermodynamics of phase transformations and the Sixth Edition features an entirely new chapter 15 that links specific thermodynamic applications to the study of phase transformations. The book also features more than 50 new end of chapter problems and more than 50 new figures.

Fundamentals and Practice in Statistical Thermodynamics

Fundamentals and Practice in Statistical Thermodynamics PDF Author: Jianzhong Wu
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1394161425
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 773

Book Description
Bridge the gap between thermodynamic theory and engineering practice with this essential textbook Thermodynamics is a discipline which straddles the fields of chemistry, physics, and engineering, and has long been a mainstay of undergraduate and graduate curricula. Conventional thermodynamics courses, however, often ignore modern developments in statistical mechanics, such as molecular simulation methods, cooperative phenomena, phase transitions, universality, as well as liquid-state and polymer theories, despite their close relevance to both fundamental research and engineering practice. Fundamentals and Practice in Statistical Thermodynamics fills this gap with an essential book that applies up-to-date statistical-mechanical techniques to address the most crucial thermodynamics problems found in chemical and materials systems. It is ideally suited to introduce a new generation of researchers and molecular engineers to modern thermodynamic topics with numerous cutting-edge applications. From Fundamentals and Practice in Statistical Thermodynamics readers will also find: An introduction to statistical-mechanical methods including molecular dynamics simulation, Monte Carlo simulation, as well as the molecular theories of phase transitions, classical fluids, electrolyte solutions, polymeric materials, and more Illustrative examples and exercise problems with solutions to facilitate student understanding Supplementary online materials covering the basics of quantum mechanics, density functional theory, variational principles of classical mechanics, intermolecular interactions, and many more subjects Fundamentals and Practice in Statistical Thermodynamics is ideal for graduate and advanced undergraduate students in chemical engineering, biomolecular engineering, environmental engineering, materials science and engineering, and all related scientific subfields of physics and chemistry.

Thermodynamics of Materials

Thermodynamics of Materials PDF Author: John B. Hudson
Publisher: Wiley-Interscience
ISBN:
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 392

Book Description
Thermodynamics of Materials A Classical and Statistical Synthesis Designed as a reference resource for practicing professionals as well as a text for advanced students, Thermodynamics of Materials offers a lucid presentation that ties together classical and statistical treatments of thermodynamics within the framework of materials science. Unlike most books in the field, it emphasizes the natural connection between these two approaches, both as a way of obtaining useful information about real systems, and as a way of showing the relations between the molecular-level properties of systems, and their properties on a macroscopic scale. In this regard, the author's aim throughout the text is to introduce the rigorous, general relations that arise from classical thermodynamics, which are system independent, and then to use statistical thermodynamic relations to calculate the expected values of the macroscopic thermodynamic parameters of the systems. Thermodynamics of Materials includes a review of classical thermodynamics, an introduction to statistical thermodynamics, and numerous practical problems in thermodynamics, especially those involving phase and chemical equilibrium. Handy appendices enhance the value of this outstanding text.

Essentials of Thermodynamics

Essentials of Thermodynamics PDF Author: N.D. Hari Dass
Publisher: SRI Books, an imprint of the Simplicity Research Institute
ISBN:
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 377

Book Description
Essentials of Thermodynamics offers a fresh perspective on classical thermodynamics and its explanation of natural phenomena. It combines fundamental principles with applications to offer an integrated resource for students, teachers and experts alike. The essence of classic texts has been distilled to give a balanced and in-depth treatment, including a detailed history of ideas which explains how thermodynamics evolved without knowledge of the underlying atomic structure of matter. The principles are illustrated by a vast range of applications, such as osmotic pressure, how solids melt and liquids boil, the incredible race to reach absolute zero, and the modern theme of the renormalization group. Topics are handled using a variety of techniques, which helps readers see how concepts such as entropy and free energy can be applied to many situations, and in diverse ways. The book has a large number of solved examples and problems in each chapter, as well as a carefully selected guide to further reading. The treatment of traditional topics like the three laws of thermodynamics, Carnot cycles, Clapeyron equation, phase equilibria, and dilute solutions is considerably more detailed than usual. For example, the chapter on Carnot cycles discusses exotic cases like the photon cycle along with more practical ones like the Otto, Diesel and Rankine cycles. There is a chapter on critical phenomena that is modern and yet highly pedagogical and contains a first principles calculation of the critical exponents of Van der Waals systems. Topics like entropy constants, surface thermodynamics, and superconducting phase transitions are explained in depth while maintaining accessibility for different readers.

Rational Thermodynamics

Rational Thermodynamics PDF Author: C. Truesdell
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461252067
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 588

Book Description
In the first edition of this book I tried to survey in brief compass the main ideas, methods, and discoveries of rational thermodynamics as it then stood, only five years after Messrs. COLEMAN & NOLL, while in Baltimore, had written the fundamental memoir that provided for the new science the one root theretofore wanting. A survey in the same style today would require an almost wholly new book, three or four times as long. As it was in 1968, again in 1983 a consecutive treatise restricted to the foundations would be premature, for at this moment they are under earnest discussion, probing analysis, and powerful attack by several students and from several directions. Because, although in the first edition I expressed some opinions I no longer hold and made some statements I should now recast or even re tract, it seems even yet to offer a simple introduction to some aspects of the field that remain current, I have chosen to reprint it unaltered except for emendation of slips and bettering of the English here and there.
