Paleozoic Stratigraphy and Resources of the Michigan Basin

Paleozoic Stratigraphy and Resources of the Michigan Basin PDF Author: G. Michael Grammer
Publisher: Geological Society of America
ISBN: 0813725313
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 350

Book Description
The Michigan Basin is a classic intracratonic basin that has played a significant role in the fundamental understanding of geological processes in such basins, and has been an important resource for oil and gas, economic minerals, groundwater, and coal. Despite the classic nature of the Michigan Basin, there has not been a "special volume" dedicated to the basin in nearly 25 years. Since that time, new advancements in the geological sciences, particularly the utilization of high-resolution sequence stratigraphy and three-dimensional geostatistical modeling, have led to a new and more comprehensive understanding of the Paleozoic sedimentary packages of the Michigan Basin. This volume provides significant new insights of the Michigan Basin to both academic and applied geoscientists; it includes papers that discuss various aspects of the sedimentology and stratigraphy of key units within the basin, as well as papers that analyze the diverse distribution of natural resources present in this basin.

Thermal History of the Michigan Basin

Thermal History of the Michigan Basin PDF Author: Kirk A. Wagenvelt

Book Description
Thermal cooling, crustal convection, high temperature fluid advection, and 1.0 km of eroded overburden are required to explain thermal maturation observations in the Michigan Basin. Observed tectonic subsidence in central Michigan follows an exponential decay indicative of thermal cooling following an anomalous heating event. Crustal convection is responsible for episodes of rapid subsidence coincident with the late Paleozoic Appalachian orogeny. Fluid advection through dilated faults reactivated by the Alleghanian orogeny brought hot fluids (as much as 2550 C) to the surface and impacted thermal maturation of organic matter in sediments. Models require 1.0 km of eroded overburden to model thermal conditions and porosities in the basin. Thermal maturation data (1149 samples, in 32 formations/groups, from 128 wells) show irregular distribution directly above and adjacent to the Midcontinent Rift. Results of short (

Geothermics in Basin Analysis

Book Description
Geothermics in Basin Analysis focuses on the study of sedimentary basins, stressing essential parts of problems in which geothermics is involved. Subject matter includes the measuring of temperature logs and capturing of industrial temperature data and their interpretation to delineate subsurface conditions and processes, the importance of porosity and pore filling for modeling thermal fields, the thermal insulation of shales, geothermal anomalies associated with mud diapirs and basin hydrodynamic regimes, temperatures related to magmatic underplating and plate tectonics.
