Author: A. I. Berezhnoi
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1468417614
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 458
Book Description
In the decade since glass-ceramics first became mass-pro duced articles of commerce, they have become a popular subject for research and invention, as attested to by the 773 references cited in this book. Discovered almost accidentally during re search on photosensitive glasses, thermally crystallized glass ceramics have been distinguished by the rapid pace of their utili zation for distinctive new products. This promise has been recognized throughout the world, and original contributions have appeared from nearly every country having an ongoing glassmaking capability. Particularly numerous have been the publications and the ideas, scientific and technolOgi cal, issuing from the USSR. For several years, the annual All Union Conference on the Glassy State has been dominated by papers on catalyzed crystallization of glasses. With regard to new prod uct lines, we learn about slag-based sitaUs (glass-ceramics) and also about specialty items derived by radiation-assisted crystalli zation in glasses, photo-sitaUs. A. I. Berezhnoi has written a comprehensive review of the publications on this topic, which includes a balanced weighting to the contributions from the USSR and the USA, and also introduces advances from Britain, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Japan, and other centers of activity.

Springer Handbook of Materials Data
Author: Hans Warlimont
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319697439
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 1146
Book Description
The second edition of this well-received handbook is the most concise yet comprehensive compilation of materials data. The chapters provide succinct descriptions and summarize essential and reliable data for various types of materials. The information is amply illustrated with 900 tables and 1050 figures selected primarily from well-established data collections, such as Landolt-Börnstein, which is now part of the SpringerMaterials database. The new edition of the Springer Handbook of Materials Data starts by presenting the latest CODATA recommended values of the fundamental physical constants and provides comprehensive tables of the physical and physicochemical properties of the elements. 25 chapters collect and summarize the most frequently used data and relationships for numerous metals, nonmetallic materials, functional materials and selected special structures such as liquid crystals and nanostructured materials. Along with careful updates to the content and the inclusion of timely and extensive references, this second edition includes new chapters on polymers, materials for solid catalysts and low-dimensional semiconductors. This handbook is an authoritative reference resource for engineers, scientists and students engaged in the vast field of materials science.

Glass
Author: Horst Scholze
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461390699
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 464
Book Description
When it was learned that Professor Scholze was revising his classic work on the nature, structure, and properties of glass, it was natural to conceive the idea of translating the new edition into English. Professor Scholze enthusiastically endorsed this suggestion and asked for the concurrence of his publisher, Springer-Verlag. Springer-Verlag welcomed the idea and readily agreed to provide support. With the essential agreements in place, Professor Michael Lakin, Professor of German at Alfred University, was asked to do the transla tion, and I subsequently agreed to work with Professor Lakin to check for technical accuracy. I was happy to accept this task because of my respect for Professor Scholze and because of the value to glass scientists and engineers of having available an English edition of Glas. Professor Scholze died before publication ofthis English edition of his work. However, he had reviewed the entire English text and had approved it. Professor Lakin and I appreciated the confidence he placed in us, and we were gratified with his acceptance of our efforts. His scientific contributions were numerous and important; they will long serve as guideposts for research in many key areas. We hope this translation of Glas will help make his legacy accessible to more people. Professor Lakin and I have tried to provide a translation that is accurate and true to the original but that has a distinctive English "flavor"; that is, it is not just a literal translation.

Low Thermal Expansion Glass Ceramics
Author: Hans Bach
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3662030837
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 235
Book Description
This book, entitled Low Thermal Expansion Glass Ceramies, is one of aseries reporting on research and development acitivites on products and processes conducted by the Schott Group. The scientifically founded development of new products and technical pro cesses has traditionally been of vital importance at Schott and has always been performed on a sc ale determined by the prospects for application of our special glasses. The scale has increased enormously since the reconstruction of the Schott Glaswerke in Mainz. The range of expert knowledge required for that could never have been supplied by Schott alone. It is also a tradition in our company to cultivate collaboration with customers, universities, and research institutes. Publications in numerous technical journals, which since 1969 we have edited to a regular timeplan as Forschungsberichte - 'research reports' - formed the basis of this cooperation. They contain up-to-date infor mation on various topics for the expert but are not suited as survey material for those whose standpoint is more remote. This is the point where we would like to place our series, to stimulate the exchange of thoughts, so that we can consider from different points of view the possibilities offered by those incredibly versatile materials, glass and glass ceramics. We would like to show scientists and engineers, interested customers, and friends and employees of our firm the knowledge that has been won through our research and development at Schott in cooperation with the users of our materials.
