Book Description
Transient heat conduction experiments were performed on graphite- epoxy composites with fibers oriented uni-directionally in the matrix. With the fiber axis arranged parallel or transverse to the 4 heat flow direction, effective thermal conductivities and diffusiveities in the three orthogonal directions were obtained. also determined in this work were the isotropic conductivity and diffusivity for the epoxy resin (Fibrite No. 934) as 0.136 BTU/ hr-F-ft. and 8.5. x 10 to the 7th power sec, respectively. A value of k=6.0 BTU/ hr-F-ft for carbon fobers (Hercules 3501-5A) in the axial direction was deduced. For the conductivity transverse to the fibers, a value of 2.4 BTU/hr-F-ft was obtained from the measured effective transverse conductivity values. The thermal capacities (pC) for the carbon fibers and resin used in this study were determined as 48.2 and 44.4 BTU/cu ft 3-F, respectively.

Thermal Behavior of a Graphite/Epoxy Composite in the Subcured State
Author: LD. Blankenship

Pages : 8
Book Description
Thermal diffusivities for a T300/5208 graphite/epoxy system were calculated from thermal conductivity, heat capacity, and density. These thermal diffusivity data were then used along with an infinite plate model having the fibers oriented in the direction perpendicular to the heat flow to predict temperature profiles during the curing process.

Directional Thermal Conductivities of Graphite/epoxy Composites: 0/90 and 0/ ± 45/90

Category : Epoxy compounds
Languages : en
Pages : 54
Book Description
This work and a predecessor investigation form a two-part experimental research program on the effective thermal conductivities of graphite-epoxy composites - the type which is used extensively in aerospace structures and other applications. Effective thermal conductivities were determined from 90 F to 250 F for composites with fibers arranged in the 0/90 and 0/+ or - 45/90 patterns. The fiber content was 60% by volume. Analysis of the data in this work and the predecessor study established a correspondence principle between the directional effective conductivities of composites with uni-directional fibers and conductivities of other types of fiber arrangements. The correspondence principle allows an approximate but rapid estimate of the quasi-isotropic conductivities of the commonly used balanced-composites. Originator-supplied keywords included: Thermal conductivities, Graphite/Epoxy, and Test equipment.

Pages : 210
Book Description
This book is intended to provide a deep understanding on the advanced treatments of thermal properties of materials through experimental, theoretical, and computational techniques. This area of interest is being taught in most universities and institutions at the graduate and postgraduate levels. Moreover, the increasing modern technical and social interest in energy has made the study of thermal properties more significant and exciting in the recent years. This book shares with the international community a sense of global motivation and collaboration on the subject of thermal conductivity and its wide spread applications in modern technologies. This book presents new results from leading laboratories and researchers on topics including materials, thermal insulation, modeling, steady and transient measurements, and thermal expansion. The materials of interest range from nanometers to meters, bringing together ideas and results from across the research field.
