Protean career orientation is considered as a real driving force to boost meaningful career success of employees. Employees those who have higher order of protean orientation and proactive in behavior are successful than average people. The study aims to provide a theoretical model of protean career orientation and its influence on career success of early career stage employees. According to the existing literature, perceived organizational support plays vital role in determining career success of employees. But the existing limited empirical studies did not clearly display the role of perceived organizational support in the relationship between proactive career behavior and career success even though protean career orientation and proactive career behavior are considered majorly as the total responsibility of employees in the new career scenario. This study proposes six propositions those were supported by previous theoretical and empirical studies done by many pioneers from all over the world. The model suggests proactive career behavior mediates the relationship between protean career orientation and career success. The relationship between proactive career behavior and career success is determined by the level of perceived organizational support. The level of career success may differ according to their category. Previous studies gave higher importance to objective career success related variable at the beginning of the research field of career success whereas later studies focus more on subjective variables. This study supports to increase existing stock of knowledge on the area of career by providing meaningful contribution by exploring Sri Lankan career world. Early career stage graduate employees are the intended sample of the study. Therefore this study supports organizations to understand the insights of careerist and helps individuals to make meaningful steps to improve the level of career success.

We study 6000 author-publication observations to investigate predictors of early career success in six fields of Economics. Concentrating on top researchers enables us to control for the effects of ability and effort, and focusing on the start of their careers minimizes distortions from reputation feedback. Our results reveal that the most important predictor for early career success is the ranking of an author's PhD granting institution, followed by his first placement. Our insights suggest that a counterfactual decrease in the Alma mater of a high ability author, who graduated from a top 10 university, by as little as 10 to 20 ranks, reduces his probability of getting a top 5 publication significantly by 13 percentage points. Lowering the ranking of his Alma mater by another 80 ranks decreases his chances of getting a top publication by a factor of three. Our findings suggest that the Economics publication market values Alma mater signals, discounting newcomers graduating from- or working at lower ranked departments.
