Memoirs of a Jew who was born in Amsterdam in 1933. Describes the Nazi occupation in 1940 and the anti-Jewish legislation which gradually isolated the Jews. In summer 1943 one of her sisters went into hiding; Jehudith, her parents, and her other sister were sent to Westerbork and in January 1944 to Bergen-Belsen, as part of a group of Jews meant to be exchanged for Germans living in Palestine. Only a small number of Jews were actually exchanged; many perished, like Onderwijzer's parents. When the camp was evacuated in April 1945, she and her sister were sent on a death transport, during which they were liberated. Onderwijzer and her sisters emigrated to Eretz-Israel in 1947-48.

Re-examining the Holocaust through Literature
Author: Aukje Kluge
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1443808318
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 395
Book Description
In the late 1980s, Holocaust literature emerged as a provocative, but poorly defined, scholarly field. The essays in this volume reflect the increasingly international and pluridisciplinary nature of this scholarship and the widening of the definition of Holocaust literature to include comic books, fiction, film, and poetry, as well as the more traditional diaries, memoirs, and journals. Ten contributors from four countries engage issues of authenticity, evangelicalism, morality, representation, personal experience, and wish-fulfillment in Holocaust literature, which have been the subject of controversies in the US, Europe, and the Middle East. Of interest to students and instructors of antisemitism, national and comparative literatures, theater, film, history, literary criticism, religion, and Holocaust studies, this book also contains an extensive bibliography with references in over twenty languages which seeks to inspire further research in an international context.

Environmental Humanities on the Brink
Author: Vincent Bruyere
Publisher: Stanford University Press
ISBN: 1503636798
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 195
Book Description
In this experimental work of ecocriticism, Vincent Bruyere confronts the seeming pointlessness of the humanities amid spectacularly negative future projections of environmental collapse. The vanitas paintings of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries dazzlingly depict heaps of riches alongside skulls, shells, and hourglasses. Sometimes even featuring the illusion that their canvases are peeling away, vanitas images openly declare their own pointlessness in relation to the future. This book takes inspiration from the vanitas tradition to fearlessly contemplate the stakes of the humanities in the Anthropocene present, when the accumulated human record could well outlast the climate conditions for our survival. Staging a series of unsettling encounters with early modern texts and images whose claims of relevance have long since expired, Bruyere experiments with the interpretive affordances of allegory and fairytale, still life and travelogues. Each chapter places a vanitas motif—canvas, debris, toxics, paper, ark, meat, and light—in conversation with stories and images of the Anthropocene, from the Pleistocene Park geoengineering project to toxic legacies to in-vitro meat. Considering questions of quiet erasure and environmental memory, this book argues we ought to keep reading, even by the flickering light of extinction.

BACKSLIDING AND FALLING AWAY
Author: GODSWORD GODSWILL ONU
Publisher: Lulu.com
ISBN: 1329029070
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 326
Book Description
The word 'backslide' literally means to 'turn back' or 'turn away' from God, our first love, or the Word of God to satan, the world, the flesh, or evil. Backsliding is a sliding back. Though backsliding is not sudden in onset, it may escalate rapidly. Backsliding is different from falling away or apostasy, which is the extreme end of backsliding. Apostasy or falling away is the act or state of rejecting the Christian Faith and belief in the Lord Jesus Christ. But backsliding has to do with going into sin, getting lukewarm, leaving your first love, living in compromise and worldliness, and such things. It is a sliding back − a going back − from our former good state.
