Book Description
Are there "masculine" and "feminine" characteristics? The answer given in this book is, No. The authors assert, and cite chapter and verse to prove, that those physical, mental, moral or social traits, which we are wont to regard as "masculine" or "feminine" are simply those of the dominant sex; that those we call "feminine" are merely the characteristics of the subordinated sex. In various states at various times when woman was dominant she was possessed of most of the "manly"qualities and practiced the "masculine" customs. She wooed the man and supported him, she did hard physical work while he performed the household tasks and cared for the children, she was polyandrous while the man was monogamous, she was taller and stronger and in every way more influential than the man. The authors conclude that no civilization can reach its highest form of development under a monosexual government, and that the ideal government is one in which both sexes are absolutely equal.

Book Description
Have you ever believed you’d one day cross paths with someone who would sweep you off your feet and offer you a life right out of a fairy tale? When you’ve spent your life hiding from monsters, it seems reasonable that you might cling to a magical, fabled romance. I did. I found it was easier to look for the positive, to remain hopeful, and to sometimes imagine a fantasy-worthy life. I’m not sure if I did it for my sanity or to keep my brother’s spirits up. You see, Ransom Bishop is not only my brother, he’s also the one who saved me from a life that would’ve ended badly, and in doing so, he gave up so much. Since the day he stole me away from the monsters when I was nine years old, Ransom has been mother, father, brother, and best friend, watching my back and protecting me from … them. For fifteen years, we thought we were safe and maybe we were. But then my brother helped a friend in need, and everything changed. They found us. Now it’s a matter of life or death, and there’s only one person my brother trusts, one man Ransom is willing to be indebted to in an effort to ensure nothing happens to me. Talon has agreed to take me in. Under one condition: Ransom has to relocate with me, and he has to fake our deaths. Again. Little do I know, but Talon is going to change my perception, my ideals, and yes, he’s going to change my life. My name is Braelyn Bishop, and this is my fairy tale. Owned is the final book in the Office Intrigue series and it contains two storylines. This book can be read as a standalone.

Book Description
J.B.S. Haldane, scientist extraordinaire—born in Britain yet spiritually bound to India—remains one of the most enigmatic geniuses of the modern era. Here is a man who saw action in two world wars, engaged in the most radical politics of his day, conducted groundbreaking scientific research, and wrote with flair and conviction—yet Haldane’s universe remains shrouded in mystery. Award-winning author Samanth Subramanian’s latest offering undoes this travesty. Besides shedding light on Haldane’s contributions to genetics and evolutionary biology—he was the first to calculate the rate at which mutations occur and accumulate in genes—the book illuminates Haldane’s inner world—his towering intellect, his radical vision of society, his provocative philosophy, and his attempts a wrestling with the essential moral questions that scientific progress must raise. Equally, the book dwells on Haldane’s years in India—his journey to the nation; his affiliation with the Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta; his attachment to the Genetics and Biometry Laboratory in Bhubaneshwar (where he died). Dronamraju’s description of Haldane as ‘the last man who knew everything’ was, at its simplest, an acknowledgement of his command over multiple subjects. But it was also an astute observation that Haldane’s era was the last time when the realms of scientific knowledge were limited enough for a single person to apprehend in near-entirety. To know everything was to see the forces of the world unified and to conceive of life in its full complexity. A Dominant Character will give readers a taste of that heady sensation.

"Composition, Chromaticism and the Developmental Process "

Author: Henry Burnett
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 135157132X
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 378

Book Description
Musicology, having been transmitted as a compilation of disparate events and disciplines, has long necessitated a 'magic bullet', a 'unified field theory' so to speak, that can interpret the steady metamorphosis of Western art music from late medieval modality to twentieth-century atonality within a single theoretical construct. Without that magic bullet, discussions of this kind are increasingly complicated and, to make matters worse, the validity of any transformational models and ideas of the natural evolution of styles is questioned and even frowned upon today as epitomizing a grotesque teleological bigotry. Going against current thinking, Henry Burnett and Roy Nitzberg claim that the teleological approach to observing stylistic change is still valid when considered from the purely compositional perspective. The authors challenge the traditional understanding of development, and advance a new theory of eleven-pitch tonality as it relates to the corpus of Western composition. The book plots the evolution of tonality and its bearing on style and the compositional process itself. The theory is not based on the diatonic aspect of the various tonal systems exploited by composers; rather, the theory is chromatically based - the chromatically inflected octave being the source not only of a highly ingenious developmental dialectic, but also encompassing the moment-to-moment progression of the musical narrative itself. Even the most profound teachings of Schenker, and the often startlingly original and worthwhile speculations of Riemann, Tovey, Dahlhaus and others, still provide no theory of development and so are ultimately unable to unite the various tendrils of the compositional organism into a unified whole. Burnett and Nitzberg move beyond existing theory and analysis to base their theory from the standpoint of chromatic 'pitch fields'. These fields are the specific chromatic pitch choices that a composer uses to inform and design a complete composition, utilizing
