"Abstract (Summary): The Young Elders: A New Generation is a psychological/sociological study of the developmental tasks of retired men. Special attention is given to the role of post-retirement employment in relationship to the developmental tasks. The sample consisted of 20 middle to upper-middle class Caucasian men. All of them had been retired for at least one year and were employed part time, or were seeking employment. Data was collected by means of a face-to-face interview using open-ended questions. The psychological literature on growth and development in adulthood is reviewed. Selected sociological works are cited concerning social and economic trends having implications for the elderly in American society. The research findings indicate that three goals, common to the subjects as a whole, comprise their developmental tasks or issues: (1) To maintain involvement in the larger society or the mainstream for the purpose of meeting personal needs for stimulation and challenge. (2) To be of service to one's community. (3) To reward onself with postponed indulgences. The responses suggest that the post-retirement job is, for these subjects, a means toward accomplishment of the developmental tasks. The findings are discussed in light of the social and economic trends in American society. Full retirement as it is known today may become psychologically and economically unfeasible for a significant proportion of the elderly in the next two to three decades. New forms of involvement in society will become necessary. Various roles for young elders are explored including that of mentor, community services volunteer, and job holder. It is suggested that these roles might be different in the future than they are today. For example, as mentor, the young elder of the future might teach the protege how to adapt to change as much, or more, than he might transmit knowledge and bestow credibility in the adult world. As community services volunteer, the young elder will replace the young married homemaker who increasingly chooses to limit the size of her family and engage in a career outside the home. As job holder, the young elder of the future might embark on his second or third major change in career direction. The author suggests that socially relevant and individually meaningful roles for the elderly can be formed through synthesis of individual and modern social needs.
