Book Description
Excerpt from The Young American's Life of Fremont The book was prepared with no political Object. I have not gone out of my way to gather laurels for the subject of it. I have sketched him, according to the best of my abili ty, just as he was, and is, aiming only to present a correct model, and to render it effective in its influence upon the character and career of the young aspirant to genius. TO Dr. John Roberton, formerly of Charleston, but now of Philadelphia, I am under special Obligations, for incidents which came under his observation while Fremont, then a lad of some thirteen years, was a pupil in his school. Other facts connected with his early history, not embraced in either of the excellent lives already before the public, I have col lected from conversations with several former residents of Charleston who were acquainted with the Fremont family. I may add, too, for the benefit Of the reader - should I hap pen to have one of this class and order - who knows so little of the character of Colonel Fremont, as to need such an assurance, that I have derived nothing whatever of my material from him. United. States! And who shall say that either the people's sorrow or joy was not based upon just apprehensions? In the one case, they trembled. For the safety of 1 the young hero, .who was the pioneer of civilization infregions so distant, .and, as it, was supposed, so entirelyxworthless to enlightefiedhumanity, thatthe late Mr. Mcdufiie compared them to thebritish convict icolony, Botany Bay! Other hand, he was recognized as'the anticipated-saviour of ourglorious blossom and fruit of the primal races of our Species, the last result of civilization in universal history, and the hope and representative of humanity raised up, as it were, by Providence to regenerate our common country from the calamities which fasten foul'stains upon her (otherwise fair) escutcheon, and to the perpetuation of which the representatives of all other political pal ties are pledged, viz. The ewtenscon upon American soil of Af1ican slavery, the p0pula1 reign of b1utality in the Ame1ican Senate, and the supp1 essmn of freedom of speech and debate within the precincts of that venerable hall! Book Description
Excerpt from Life: Explorations and Public Services of John Charles Fremont The second and third chapters of this work, embracing the period covered by the first two expeditions, have substantially the value and authority of an autobiography. Fremont tells his own story, in passages extracted from his Reports. This part of the volume gives, with the accompanying illustrations, a perfectly authentic account - as good as can be found - of the interior of the North American continent, its great features, and the races that occupy it. The Rocky Mountains, the parallel range of the Sierra Nevada, with the Basin - so full of strange interest, and not yet wholly made known to geography - between them; and the Pacific regions, are here described, in his own fresh and effective style, by their explorer. Book Description
Excerpt from Biographical Sketch of Colonel Fremont During this survey General Jackson was President of the United States. It was not an uncommon thing for Old Hickory (as he was familiarly called by the people), on hearing of any meritorious deed performed by a young man, to offer him a commission in the army. The fame of Fremont had reached him; and the consequence was the tender of a commission to the young South Carolinian, which was accepted. This commission was in the corps of Topographical Engineers - a scientific corps, and that which holds the highest rank in the American army. Fremont justly considered it a great honour to be chosen to this arm of the service, the more so as the road to it usually lies through the Military College of 'vest Point. It was, then, a high tribute to his merits to be thus appointed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
