Politics, Ideology, and Education

Politics, Ideology, and Education PDF Author: Elizabeth H. Debray
Publisher: Teachers College Press
ISBN: 9780807746677
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 252

Book Description
In this fascinating account, the author examines the politics of federal education policy through the lens of the most recent reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). Using the epic battle that spanned two Congresses and two presidential administrations, this book illustrates the new dynamics of political interactions and policy formulation as they affect public education issues. Highlighting the polarization between the two parties and how it affected the outcome of the bill, this book: explains why President Bush succeeded in passing an expansive education bill, No Child Left Behind, and President Clinton failed to do so; describes the changing institutional relationships and shows why practitioner groups were largely left out of the process; reveals how leaders in the House and Senate were able to compromise on provisions like testing, choice, and accountability; and reframes the analysis of the changed political and institutional environment in which education policy decisions will be made in the new century.

Education in China Since 1976

Education in China Since 1976 PDF Author: Xiufang Wang
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 9780786482139
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 328

Book Description
China has the largest education system in the world. The total enrollment of students in regular and adult schools at all levels exceeds 320 million, accounting for more than a quarter of the nation's population. Western educators, foreign companies, and individual entrepreneurs have invested in Chinese education but, perhaps because of the complexity of the Chinese education system and the rapid development of educational reforms, have had little success. This work examines the education system in post-Mao China from 1976 to the present. It explores how the Chinese government sees the development of its educational practices within the nation's broader social, economic, political, and cultural contexts; how it identifies new issues that emerge in the process of what might be called educational globalization; how it translates these issues into specific educational policies, activities, and goals; how the education reforms fit China's social and political realities and objectives; how the new policies affect foreign student affairs and Chinese students studying abroad; the ways in which the government promotes international educational cooperation and exchange; the opportunities for Western institutions to introduce programs in China; and current trends and their effect on the internationalization of education.

Handbook of Comparative Education Law

Handbook of Comparative Education Law PDF Author: Charles J. Russo
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 1475821727
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 189

Book Description
Each of the four volumes in this set, as well as each volume independently, provide comparative analyses for researches, practitioners, and students of the law and education in examining law and education in various countries around the world. Designed to allow readers to learn from, rather than copy, the legal and educational systems in these volumes, the books are designed to generate thought and conversation on how education can be improved around the world. By having chapter authors, leading academicians in the home countries, follow the same template so it can be easier to compare similarities and differences, thereby helping to make the book user friendly. The value of these books is that they should help to enhance international awareness of the similarities and advantages associated with bringing together knowledge from various countries concerning education law. Volume 3, encompassing Selected Nations in Europe, namely Ireland, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, and Spain, consists of detailed analysis of educational law and systems in these representative countries so researchers and students there and elsewhere can learn from one another.
