Book Description
Nine year old Bo has no uneventful days now that she has set out to single-handedly save her twenty-four year old brother, Everett, a mob enforcer, from being murdered. The coming of age/crime novel begins in 1954 in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, the thriving steel producing giant dominated by the National Tube mill. Permeating the blue collar city is a powerful crime syndicate. Bo has no illusions about her sense of place living with her unpredictable family of six adults, all of whom are self absorbed with their own problems. Forced to fend for herself, the headstrong tomboy makes her own rules and goes her own way. Everett is emotionally closed off from the household. Only Bo receives his attention during those sporadic times he berates the family for not providing a stable home life for the young girl. Everett hides his mob ties by working at the steel mill, but with Bo's unlimited freedom and curiosity, she soon learns of her brother's involvement in the syndicate. The ensuing choices brother and sister make, along with those forced upon them, unleash a chain of events that will determine the fate of both siblings. Honey from Thorns is a work of fiction. The characters are wholly imaginary. Certain streets, places, establishments and customs in McKeesport are as the author remembers from her youth and may not be entirely accurate.

Trees for Everyone - Easy Tree Studies for All Seasons of the Year PDF Author: Julia Ellen Rogers

Book Description
It was late April when I came by. As I looked up into that tree top the sunlight was shining through, and at first I thought I must be dreaming. Instead of buds, I saw what seemed like lighted candles, each with a silken frill, like the recurved petals of an iris, below the tip of flame! I had never seen a tree thus illuminated, and the sight was enchanting. The warm spring air had brought out the hickory buds, with those of other trees, and while I was looking for flowers on the ground, the buds above had swollen, cast off the winter covers, revealing the silky inner wrappings of the young shoots. The rich downward-curving "petals" were only the inner scales of the great buds, grown long and wide, their vivid orange setting off the compact yellow buds that still stood erect... I had never seen a hickory tree opening its iris-like buds before, but I have never missed it since. [From Chapter 1]

Between Two Thorns

Between Two Thorns PDF Author: Emma Newman
Publisher: Diversion Books
ISBN: 1682303144
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 408

Book Description
“JK Rowling meets Georgette Heyer” in this series debut, a scintillating fusion of urban fantasy and court intrigue from the Hugo Award-winning author (The Guardian). Between Mundanus, the world of humans, and Exilium, the world of the Fae, lies the Nether, a mirror-world where the social structure of 19th-century England is preserved by Fae-touched families who remain loyal to their ageless masters. Born into this world is Catherine Rhoeas-Papaver, who escapes it all to live a normal life in Mundanus, free from her parents and the strictures of Fae-touched society. But now she’s being dragged back to face an arranged marriage, along with all the high society trappings it entails. Crossing paths with Cathy is Max, an Arbiter of the Split Worlds treaty with a dislocated soul who polices the boundaries between the worlds, keeping innocents safe from the Fae. After a spree of kidnappings and the murder of his fellow Arbiters, Max is forced to enlist Cathy’s help in unravelling a high-profile disappearance within the Nether. Getting involved in the machinations of the Fae, however, may prove fatal to all involved. “Between Two Thorns shows the darkness beneath the glamour of the social Season. Learning to be a young lady has never seemed so dangerous.”—Mary Robinette Kowal, Hugo and Nebula Award-winning author of the Lady Astronaut series “Emma Newman has built a modern fantasy world with such élan and authority her ideas of why and how the seemingly irrational world of Fairy works should be stolen by every other writer in the field . . . This book of wonders is first rate.”—Bill Willingham, Eisner Award-winning author of Fables
