Book Description
Excerpt from The World's Revolutions Have you ever been adrift on the ocean in an open boat? Have you ever been all alone in that mighty solitude of sky and sea, with only one-half inch of wood between your life and a salt water grave five thousand fathoms deep? Did you ever realize what it means to have noth ing but your own isolated brain, bone and muscle to pit against the overwhelming forces of nature? One man, and one tiny boat, against a thousand miles of heaving brine and the unbridled winds of heaven! One brain to foresee and overcome the storms, the giant waves, the scorching heat of the noon day sun, the drenching rains, the treacherous currents, the cold and lonely nights, and to con trol the wild ravings of your animal body that would turn you against yourself, that would prompt you to devour your scant supply of food and drink in a few mad feasts. The World Peace and After (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Carl Henry Grabo

Category : Political Science

Book Description
Excerpt from The World Peace and After We witness now the initial stages of that revolution. The world war has long since ceased to be only a war between rival groups of states; it is a conflict of ideals. It has become a war of classes; war between the rights of persons and the rights of property. The powerful and propertied minorities the world over are being drawn together in a contest of survival waged with the masses, which, strong in numbers, are weak in organization, in leaders, in the tradition of authority, and have little control of the political and industrial machinery which has hitherto ruled the world. We are witness to the incipient stages of the last and greatest revolution, that by which the masses seek to wrest power from the bourgeoisie. Other revolutions in history have exacted power from kings and placed it in the hands of the nobility. These in turn have been largely merged with the commercial classes, and political and social power has shifted to the hands of those who control the wealth of the world. The revolution whose initial tremors we now discern but which may not be completed in our time is that which seeks to effect a still wider distribution of power: to place it truly where before it has been but ostensibly, in the hands of the people. Revolution and Rebellion in the Early Modern World

Revolution and Rebellion in the Early Modern World PDF Author: Jack A. Goldstone
Publisher: Univ of California Press
ISBN: 9780520913752
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 644

Book Description
What can the great crises of the past teach us about contemporary revolutions? Arguing from an exciting and original perspective, Goldstone suggests that great revolutions were the product of 'ecological crises' that occurred when inflexible political, economic, and social institutions were overwhelmed by the cumulative pressure of population growth on limited available resources. Moreover, he contends that the causes of the great revolutions of Europe—the English and French revolutions—were similar to those of the great rebellions of Asia, which shattered dynasties in Ottoman Turkey, China, and Japan. The author observes that revolutions and rebellions have more often produced a crushing state orthodoxy than liberal institutions, leading to the conclusion that perhaps it is vain to expect revolution to bring democracy and economic progress. Instead, contends Goldstone, the path to these goals must begin with respect for individual liberty rather than authoritarian movements of 'national liberation.' Arguing that the threat of revolution is still with us, Goldstone urges us to heed the lessons of the past. He sees in the United States a repetition of the behavior patterns that have led to internal decay and international decline in the past, a situation calling for new leadership and careful attention to the balance between our consumption and our resources. Meticulously researched, forcefully argued, and strikingly original, Revolutions and Rebellions in the Early Modern World is a tour de force by a brilliant young scholar. It is a book that will surely engender much discussion and debate.

Book Description
Excerpt from The History and Theory of Revolutions Let us look, then, if possible, a little into this matter of Revolutions. Let us examine their facts, find out if possible their theory, and trace some leading outlines of their history keeping in view always the special relations of our investiga tions to the case of our own civil troubles. And it is no affecta tion to say, that when a man ventures to attempt such a theme, at such a time as this, it behooves him to gather all his best thoughts about him; to weigh well the theories he presents, and the judgments he renders; and to point the eye of inquiry and hope to that only which will not finally deceive. What, then, is Revolution? What is its definition? Tat its theory? What has been its history? When is it justifiable? When probably successful? These are questions which may indicate the general drift of inquiry which is before us. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Three Years of World-Revolution (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Paul Lensch

Category : Political Science

Pages : 242

Book Description
Excerpt from Three Years of World-Revolution As had been foreseen by all serious students of German affairs, the German Socialist party offered no serious opposition to the German Government at the outbreak of war. 4 The subsequent identi fication of the Socialists with enthusiasm for the war and its aims was inevitable, and was accen tuated by German military triumphs. After one and a half years of war the process had gone so far that Haase, Kautsky, Bernstein, Ledebour, and their little knot of adherents were forced/ to break away. A year later they were able to form the Independent Social Democratic party of Germany, but even then the Minority' move ment, as it is called, proved to be at least premature, as an effective influeiice - for pacifism and inter nationalism - upon the main currents of opinion and action. The Majority continued to domi nate German Socialism, seizing the whole party machine and Press, and co-ope'ratingflwhether by open support or by a sometimes still more service able appearance of opposition - with the German Government. Book Description
Excerpt from The Eve of the French Revolution The larger number of people, who had been living quietly in the existing order, were amused and interested. The attacks of the Philosophers seemed to them just in many cases, the reasoning conclusive. But in their hearts they could not believe in the reality and importance of the assault. Some of those most interested in keeping the world as it was, honestly or frivolously joined in the cry for reform and for destruction.
