Book Description
Excerpt from The World Agricultural Situation 1959 Consumption of most farm products will increase this season, though not as much as supplies. Demand for food continues strong. It was little affected by the recession or a slowing down of economic activity in the industrialized countries of North America, Western Europe, and Japan. Demand for raw materials for industrial uses has slackened somewhat, however. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Agricultural Situation, Vol. 43: December 1959 Farm prices and incomes in 1960 are likely to show much the same trends as this year. Farm income is expected to decline, probably about half as much as in 1959. Prices for farm products are likely to slip further, but sharp declines, such as those for hogs and eggs in 1959, are not expected. Supplies of farm products will re main heavy in 1960 with further ao cumulation of already excessive stocks of wheat and feed grains. Heavy sup plies will be partly offset by expected increases in exports, rising economic activity, and improved retail demand for food. Book Description
Excerpt from Agricultural Situation, Vol. 43: September 1959 With the minimum national allot ment in effect for 1960 and with 1956 59 average yields, a crop of about billion bushels could be produced. Book Description
Excerpt from Agricultural Situation, Vol. 43: August 1959 Much of the feed purchased today is already mixed for feeding. But many farmers, especially those in the Midwest, buy grain locally for feed ing with commercially prepared pro tein supplements or for home mixing. Prices of grains and meals are affected by many forces - and often change rather sharply. The time of harvest, the size of the crop, changes in demand from feeders, and many other factors may influence the price of one grain or meal more than another. Agrarian Revolt in the Sierra of Chihuahua, 1959–1965

Agrarian Revolt in the Sierra of Chihuahua, 1959–1965 PDF Author: Elizabeth Henson
Publisher: University of Arizona Press
ISBN: 0816538735
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 297

Book Description
The early 1960s are remembered for the emergence of new radical movements influenced by the Cuban Revolution. One such protest movement rose in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. With large timber companies moving in on the forested sierra highlands, campesinos and rancheros did not sit by as their lands and livelihoods were threatened. Continuing a long history of agrarian movements and local traditions of armed self-defense, they organized and demanded agrarian rights. Thousands of students joined the campesino protests in long-distance marches, land invasions, and direct actions that transcended political parties and marked the participants’ emergence as political subjects. The Popular Guerrilla Group (GPG) took shape from sporadic armed conflicts in the sierra. Early victories in the field encouraged the GPG to pursue more ambitious targets, and on September 23, 1965, armed farmers, agricultural workers, students, and teachers attacked an army base in Madera, Chihuahua. This bold move had deadly consequences. With a sympathetic yet critical eye, historian Elizabeth Henson argues that the assault undermined and divided the movement that had been in its cradle, sacrificing the most militant, audacious, and serious of a generation at a time when such sacrifices were more frequently observed. Henson shows how local history merged with national tensions over one-party rule, the unrealized promises of the Mexican Revolution, and international ideologies.
