The New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature: Volume 2, 1660-1800

The New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature: Volume 2, 1660-1800 PDF Author: George Watson
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521079341
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 1698

Book Description
More than fifty specialists have contributed to this new edition of volume 2 of The Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature. The design of the original work has established itself so firmly as a workable solution to the immense problems of analysis, articulation and coordination that it has been retained in all its essentials for the new edition. The task of the new contributors has been to revise and integrate the lists of 1940 and 1957, to add materials of the following decade, to correct and refine the bibliographical details already available, and to re-shape the whole according to a new series of conventions devised to give greater clarity and consistency to the entries.

A New Variorum Edition of Shakespeare CORIOLANUS Volume I

A New Variorum Edition of Shakespeare CORIOLANUS Volume I PDF Author: David George
Publisher: Lulu.com
ISBN: 0359256732
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 656

Book Description
The first New Variorum edition of Coriolanus, by Horace Howard Furness, Jr., was published in 1928. The present edition follows Furness's but does not replace it because frequently the more recent scholarship and criticism recorded here could be accommodated only by reducing Furness's fuller treatment of earlier material. The reader who finds this edition useful is urged to consult Furness's as well to obtain a fuller account on many subjects. Niels Herold wrote the section on Music and Sound Effects, and Sylvia Bryant and Ian Aspinall translated German criticism. Megan-Marie Johnson collaborated with me on the Plan of the Work, on the collations necessary to compile the Textual Notes, and on the Commentary. Ashley Spriggs helped revise the Plan of the Work and the Textual Notes. Both of these latter assistants also had a hand in all the other sections of the edition...

Shakespeare And Elizabethan Popular Culture

Shakespeare And Elizabethan Popular Culture PDF Author: Neil Rhodes
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1408143631
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 355

Book Description
While much has been written on Shakespeare's debt to the classical tradition, less has been said about his roots in the popular culture of his own time. This is the first book to explore the full range of his debts to Elizabethan popular culture. Topics covered include the mystery plays, festive custom, clowns, romance and popular fiction, folklore and superstition, everyday sayings, and popular songs. These essays show how Shakespeare, throughout his dramatic work, used popular culture. A final chapter, which considers ballads with Shakespearean connections in the seventeenth century, shows how popular culture immediately after his time used Shakespeare.

All's Well That Ends Well

All's Well That Ends Well PDF Author: William Shakespeare
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1408151928
Category : Drama
Languages : en
Pages : 334

Book Description
In All's Well That Ends Well, Helen, a lowly ward, risks her life to satisfy her boundless love for Bertram, a count and ward to the King of France. Following him to Paris, she concocts an endangering plan to win the King of France's favour and induce Bertram's hand in marriage. In the comprehensive introduction to this new, fully-illustrated Arden edition, Suzanne Gossett takes a transformative look at the play's critical and performance history by offering fresh perspectives on the conundrum of genre, sexuality and moral dilemmas with masculinity and the structures of family. The authoritative play text is amply annotated to clarify its language and allusions, and two appendices debate the play's authorship and review its casting. Offering students and scholars alike a wealth of insight and new research, this edition maintains the rigorous standards of the Arden Shakespeare.
