Underclass

Underclass PDF Author: John Welshman
Publisher: A&C Black
ISBN: 1472513711
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 201

Book Description
Who are those at the bottom of society? There has been much discussion in recent years, on both Left and Right, about the existence of an alleged 'underclass' in both Britain and the USA. It has been claimed this group lives outside the mainstream of society, is characterised by crime, suffers from long-term unemployment and single parenthood, and is alienated from its core values. John Welshman shows that there have always been concerns about an 'underclass', whether constructed as the 'social residuum' of the 1880s, the 'problem family' of the 1950s or the 'cycle of deprivation' of the 1970s. There are marked differences between these concepts, but also striking continuities. Indeed a concern with an 'underclass' has in many ways existed as long as an interest in poverty itself. This book is the first to look systematically at the question, providing new insights into contemporary debates about behaviour, poverty and welfare reform. This new edition of the pioneering text has been updated throughout and includes brand new chapters on 'Problem Families' and New Labour as well as 'Troubled Families' and the Coalition Government. It is a seminal work for anyone interested in the social history of Britain and the Welfare State.

A History of the Roles and Responsibilities of Social Workers

A History of the Roles and Responsibilities of Social Workers PDF Author: Mike Burt
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000071383
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 294

Book Description
Tracing the origin of work with the ‘impotent poor’ under the Poor Laws, to social workers’ current responsibilities towards vulnerable people, this book introduces the reader to the way in which the identification of particular social problems at the end of the nineteenth century led to the emergence of a wide range of separate occupational groups and voluntary workers, which were sometimes, but increasingly, referred to as social workers. Using an extended single chronological historical narrative and analysis, which draws heavily on original archival sources and contemporary literature, it addresses the changes which took place as part of the welfare state and the identification of common roles and responsibilities by social workers, which led to the formation of the British Association of Social Workers in 1970. The expansion of roles and responsibilities in social services departments and voluntary societies is analysed, and their significance for the development of social work is evaluated. By highlighting the changes and continuities in these roles and responsibilities, this book will be of interest to all academics, students, and practitioners working within social work, who wish to know more about the origins of their discipline and the current state of the profession today.

Social and Medical Problems of the Elderly

Social and Medical Problems of the Elderly PDF Author: Kenneth Hazell
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1040007740
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 333

Book Description
In the 1960s and 1970s doctors were increasingly trained to apply science to the eradication of disease, the accent being on the treatment of disease rather than the true welfare of the patient. This is not the same as dealing with illness and its attendant problems. Originally published in 1976, this book highlights the modern approach to the care of the elderly at the time, and emphasises the individual contributions of doctor, nurse, social worker and paramedical members of the team. It also stresses the important role of voluntary associations relatives and neighbours. Much of the book is concerned with the particular medical problems which occur in the elderly and would have been of great help to the physician practising geriatric medicine at the time. This new fourth edition of the standard textbook had been fully revised and includes additional chapters on such important and practical matters as Pensionable Retirement, Housing, Home Help Services and the scope of the Hospital Advisory Service.
